Out-Of-Body Experience Triggered by Heartbeats
Triggering an out-of-body experience could be easier than previously thought, new research suggests. By using synchronized heartbeats, scientists found that such an extracorporeal experience can happen quite effortlessly.
The study’s findings could pave the way to the development of new treatments for people suffering from self-perceptual disorders such as anorexia, for instance.
An out-of-body experience or OBE happens usually happens when someone experiences a feeling of viewing their body from the outside or of floating outside of their body. Whether you’re a skeptic or not, it’s important to note that most people don’t have such experiences because our brain is constantly processing information relayed by all our senses and that keeps us ‘grounded.’
But this brain control is actually easy to disrupt, the new study has found. The researchers determined that an out-of-body experience can be triggered by watching an image of you own body flashing simultaneously with your heartbeat.
A total of 17 subjects were fitted with virtual reality goggles and shown videos of their body from behind (made to look as if the body was about 6.5 feet in front of them). The image was then made to flash in time with the volunteer’s own heartbeats.
The result was that all those watching the image synchronized with their heartbeat actually began to identify more with the virtual self they were seeing rather than their own body. After experiencing the synchronized heartbeats for a few minutes, several participants reported that they were feeling as if they were in a different part of the room, away from their physical body.
Researchers say the experiment clearly shows how one’s experience of the self can be modified by tricking the mind with information about the internal state of the body – in this case a heartbeat. They hope the results will be able to help people who are suffering from various psychological problems that have to do with a distorted perception of the self.
The experiment could be adjusted so as to help people reconnect with their self, which would be especially useful in the treatment of anorexia or body dysmorphic disorder, in which the patients are stuck with a certain image they have of themselves and cannot change their perception.

HTML5 Geolocation API Tutorial with Example
HTML5 has finally pushed the web ahead with many new APIs that were lacking since the inception of HTML. New APIs like DOM Storage API helps in making better web applications.
As part of the specification, HTML5 added set of new APIs under title Geolocation that helps the applications to identify location related information from visiting users. Here is the official definition from HTML5 specification:
The Geolocation API defines a high-level interface to location information associated only with the device hosting the implementation, such as latitude and longitude. The API itself is agnostic of the underlying location information sources. Common sources of location information include Global Positioning System (GPS) and location inferred from network signals such as IP address, RFID, WiFi and Bluetooth MAC addresses, and GSM/CDMA cell IDs, as well as user input. No guarantee is given that the API returns the device’s actual location.
The API can be used to get current location (latitude, longitude) of user.
Understanding Geolocation API
In order to utilize Geolocation API in a web application, we must understand the API structures. The browser that supports Geolocation API provides navigator object with geolocation object.This object can be used to retrieve location info. Following are the methods:

It initialize the Geolocation API using navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition() method. A callback method callback() is registered which gets called once the location is retrieved. Error Handling
There are different error conditions that one should take care while dealing with Geolocation API. The second parameter of the getCurrentPosition() method is used to handle errors. It specifies a function to run if it fails to get the user’s location:
navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(callback, errorHandler);
The errorHandler() method is called if there is any error while retrieving user location. This method will be called with one argument: error code. The error code should be checked for following values to know what type of error occurred.

Get Current Location Repeatedly (Watching the location)
We saw how to get current user location using getCurrentPosition() method. However this method only gives location only once, when it is called. Sometimes it is desirable to get users location continuously if it changes. This will never happen if user is accessing webpage from a desktop machine. But smartphones/tablets are common contenders to use Geolocation API and get location continuously if user is on move.
The method watchPosition() is used to watch users location. Below is the syntax for this method:

The method takes one argument, the callback function which gets called when location is obtained. Note that unlike getCurrentPosition() method, the watchPosition() method returns a long value watchID. This id can be used to uniquely identify the requested position watcher; and this value can be used in tandem with the clearPosition() method to stop watching the user’s location.

Carbyne: World’s Strongest Material
Step over graphene and diamond, there’s a new super-strong form of carbon in town! Named carbyne, this may very well be the world’s strongest material.
The substance is not entirely new but its properties have been described in detail by scientists for the first time. A paper published by Rice University researchers also lists the mathematical formula behind this special form of carbon.
Graphene is likely to lose the title of strongest material in favor of carbyne.
This supermaterial is made of an indefinitely long chain of carbon atoms, linked together by sequential double bonds or by alternating triple and single bonds. The research has found that carbyne is incredibly strong and stiff, unlike any other material previously studied.
For instance, it takes a force of about 10 nanonewtons to break only one atomic chain in the molecular structure of carbyne. Similarly, this new form of carbon is so stiff it cannot be stretched, but it can be bent into a circle or an arc.
And just like graphene, is it only one atom thick, which means that it has a relatively massive surface area. With graphene, for example, one gram of the substance has the same surface area as five tennis courts.
Carbyne has been known to scientists for some time, as it has been detected either in interstellar dust or in meteorites. But since it is hard to replicate, little has been known about it until now. Recently, scientists succeeded in creating a carbyne chain of a little of 40 atoms and the research continues.
Due to its unique properties, carbyne can have an impressive range of applications if synthesized. It could be used for electromechanical and nanomechanical devices and systems, leading up to hydrogen storage and energy storage for high density batteries.

What would you do, if you could do anything?
I don't mean in a fantasy superhero way, but in terms of resources. If someone told you that you now had the resources to attempt to make one thing happen in the world, one real thing, what would that be?
If you're Elon Musk, the patron saint of Hacker News, then you create an electric car and rocket ships. And then propose a hyperloop. Not bad. Not bad at all.
My dream is more modest. I decided to create a keyboard.
I've talked about keyboards here for years, but The CODE Keyboard is the only simple, clean, beautiful backlit mechanical keyboard I've ever found. Because we built it that way.
The name is of course a homage to one of my favorite books.
That's what I've always loved about programming, the thrill of discovering that communicating with other human beings in their code is the true secret to success in writing code for computers. It's all just … code.

The projects I've worked on for the last eight years are first and foremost systems for efficiently communicating with other human beings, not computers. Both Stack Exchange and Discourse are deeply concerned with people and words and the code they use to talk to each other. The only way those words arrive on your screen is because someone, somewhere typed them. Now, I've grown to begrudgingly accept the fact that touchscreen keyboards are here to stay, largely because the average person just doesn't need to produce much written communication in a given day. So the on-screen keyboard, along with a generous dollop of autocomplete and autofix, suffices.
But I'm not an average person. You aren't an average person. We aren't average people. We know how to use the most powerful tool on the web – words. Strip away the images and gradients and vectors from even the fanciest web page, and you'll find that the web is mostly words. If you believe, as I do, in the power of words, then keyboards have to be one of the most amazing tools mankind has ever created. Nothing lets you get your thoughts out of your brain and into words faster and more efficiently than a well made keyboard. It's the most subversive thing we've invented since the pen and the printing press, and probably will remain so until we perfect direct brain interfaces.
I was indoctrinated into the keyboard cult when I bought my first computer. But I didn't appreciate it. Few do. The world is awash in terrible, crappy, no name how-cheap-can-we-make-it keyboards. There are a few dozen better mechanical keyboard options out there. I've owned and used at least six different expensive mechanical keyboards, but I wasn't satisfied with any of them, either: they didn't have backlighting, were ugly, had terrible design, or were missing basic functions like media keys.
That's why I originally contacted Weyman Kwong of WASD Keyboards way back in early 2012.* I told him that the state of keyboards was unacceptable to me as a geek, and I proposed a partnership wherein I was willing to work with him to do whatever it takes to produce a truly great mechanical keyboard. Weyman is a hard core keyboard nut who absolutely knows his stuff – I mean, he runs a whole company that sells custom high end mechanical keyboards – but I don't think he had ever met anyone like me before, a guy who was willing to do a no strings attached deal just for the love of an idealized keyboard. At one point over a lunch meeting, he paused, thought a bit, and said:
So … you're like … some kind of geek humanitarian?
I don't know about that.
But I'm not here to sell you a keyboard. Buy, don't buy. It doesn't matter. I'm just happy to live in a world where the first truly great mechanical keyboard finally exists now, in exactly the form it needed to, with every detail just so, and I can type this very post on it. As glorious as that may be, I'm here to sell you on something much more dangerous: the power of words. So whether you decide to use the CODE Keyboard , or any keyboard at all, I'm glad you're thinking about writing words with us.
