Taking Hospitals Hostage With Ransomware

When hackers first stumbled upon the treasure trove of personal identifiable information that hospitals, medical centers, and doctors’ offices collected on their patients, the entire industry became a target for identity theft. With an afternoon’s worth of hacking, thieves could make off with hundreds of thousands of patients’ records; if the medical center complex was connected by a shared network, the number of affected victims in a single hacking event could even reach the millions.

But hackers have a new tool at their disposal, thanks to the punishment that a medical center faces if they become the victims of a data breach (yes, if a hacker infiltrates their network, even in spite of strict security protocols, the hospital can be held responsible for the HIPAA violation associated with exposing patients’ confidential records). With the massive fines and penalties associated with a patient privacy violation, hackers have now learned that there’s serious money to be made from ransomware.

In a ransomware attack, not only is the hospital facing punitive monetary damages, but with patient records under lock and key, there’s the very real threat of danger to human life (and then the resulting lawsuits associated with that); several hospitals have been reduced to the Stone Age paper-and-pen records systems just to continue providing care during a ransomware attack, and one California hospital so far this year has already paid the hackers in Bitcoin to unlock its network in order to continue helping its patients.

At the same time, the medical industry can be hit hard by a single hacking event, which is why thieves are going after the industry in such a big way. UCLA Health, which had 4.5 million patient records breached in a single event, stated in its notification letter that it blocks “millions” of known hacking attempts every year.

The next big thing in IT and software development? Creating an impenetrable medical records network that will allow hospitals to continue meeting the needs of the sick and injured while keeping hackers at bay. If even the FBI couldn’t get into an outdated iPhone, surely there’s a team who can write a code that will prevent this type of crime.

YouTube Stay Lets You Search While Watching Simultaneously

Despite Google’s continuous efforts of making ultimate video experience at YouTube, there are still a couple of things it does wrong. One of these shortcomings includes the fact that you cannot search while watching a video. You will have to unnecessary open a new tab, then open YouTube and search again. To overcome these issues, we can use a nifty Chrome extension – “YouTube Stay”.

Search YouTube Within the Same Tab and Create Playlists On-the-fly

YouTube Stay eliminates the need for opening multiple tabs to browse and watch videos at the same time by displaying search results on the sidebar of the video that you are watching. It also provides you the ability to create custom playlists, think of managing queues on music players.

Sidebar search in YouTube

To get started, first of all, go ahead and install it from the Chrome store. Once that’s done, you’ll get a nice little YouTube icon on your extensions tray with an “On” badge over it.

Now head over to YouTube.com for testing out the extension. Fire up any video and enter a query in the search box. Hit the search button and the extension will replace the standard recommended videos list with the search outcomes. I do wish there was a “More” button to extend the list to the second page, but I guess that’s preserved for future updates. If you for some reason, need to perform the normal search, press “Ctrl + Enter” after inputting a query.

Another good feature this extension is “Ad-Hoc playlists” that lets you add videos on-the-fly to your playing list. This will be a dynamic list which won’t be saved to your account. It will act like the autoplay where the next video of your choice will be played instead of YouTube’s suggested video.

To add a video, Click the red “Add to playlist” button underneath any search result. That’s it, there’s nothing else you need to do for creating custom playlists. You’ll see the upcoming content under the “Up Next” section where you can also remove a video or rearrange the order using the two arrow buttons.

YouTube Stay is definitely a must-have extension if you rely heavily on YouTube for a daily dose of entertainment just like us. The playlist functionality especially helps using the service as a music-streaming platform, I hope Google brings these features natively in the near future.

Digital Mass Surveillance Silences Dissenters

A newly published study has found that people with knowledge that their society or community is subject to mass surveillance, even where that surveillance is widely accepted, and widely condoned by the populace at large, is more likely to censor dissenting or even personal opinions in online environments.

blue eye

That is at least according to a scientific report in the latest edition of Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly. The study monitored the effects of subtle, and in some cases almost subliminal messages that reminded the experiments subjects of the mass surveillance that surrounded them.

The scientists found that the majority of participants reacted to the reminders and provided stimulus by suppressing their opinions and true feelings on topics that they considered to be either non-mainstream, or where they thought they would find themselves in the minority.

In effect, it highlights the reasons why many governments would rather their citizens didn’t know that were under an umbrella of state surveillance.

The study lends itself to the social-studies phenomenon known as the ‘spiral of silence.’ In the US, whistle-blower, Edward Snowden has been credited with helping create a ‘spiral of silence’ there after his revelations revealed to the American public just how ingrained the culture of surveillance had become entrenched in the years after 9/11.

The study found subjects who were “primed of government surveillance significantly reduced the likelihood of speaking out in hostile opinion climates. These findings introduce important theoretical and normative consequences. Theoretically, it adds a new layer of chilling effects to the spiral of silence. This is the first study to provide empirical evidence that the government’s online surveillance programs may threaten the disclosure of minority views and contribute to the reinforcement of majority opinion.”

The idea behind the ‘spiral,’ is that people avoid stating a true opinion on a subject to fit in with ‘friends’ on social media, and also not to bring attention to themselves from listening government ears.

Lead researcher of the study, Elizabeth Stoycheff, said she was concerned about what her team discovered when their experiment had concluded:

“It concerns me that surveillance seems to be enabling a culture of self-censorship because it further disenfranchises minority groups. And it is difficult to protect and extend the rights of these vulnerable populations when their voices aren’t part of the discussion. Democracy thrives on a diversity of ideas, and self-censorship starves it….Shifting this discussion so Americans understand that civil liberties are just as fundamental to the country’s long-term well-being as thwarting very rare terrorist attacks is a necessary move.”

So much for democracy and the internet.
