Google Introduces Feature Similar to Facebook and Snapchat Stories: YouTube Reels

Google has been working towards giving YouTube a more social network like feel for some time now. Last year, Google introduced us to YouTube communities, which had a strong social network feel – allowing users to post text/images etc. Today, YouTube took things one step forward with YouTube Reels: which is quite similar to the stories feature we’ve seen on Snapchat and Facebook.

Stories have been coming to almost all apps of late – Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp – you name it. YouTube Reels too, are quite similar to stories on these platforms.

YouTube Reels are basically short videos that can be quickly uploaded and shared with the community. This is how YouTube officially describes YouTube Reels:

Reels are YouTube’s spin on the popular “stories” format, but designed specifically for YouTube creators. We learned that you want the flexibility to create multiple Reels and have them not expire, so we’ll give you those options. We’re also bringing creator-focused features like linking to YouTube videos and YouTube-y stickers.

In addition to introducing YouTube Reels, YouTube has also opened their community feature to many more users as anyone who has over 10,000 subscribers can now become a community and begin posting text, GIFs, pictures, polls etc.

The biggest difference between YouTube Reels and stories on Snapchat, Facebook, etc. is the fact that these reels will not disappear after 24 hours like stories. These reels will continue to exist permanently in a separate section unless specifically deleted by the community owner.

These YouTube Reels can be of up to 30 seconds and filters and music can be added to them before uploading them. Users viewing Reels can engage with them the way they do with regular videos – giving them thumbs-up or thumbs-down, as well as comment on them. As of now this feature is in a Beta phase and will not be accessible to all community owners. No word on when it will release for a larger group of users. Stay tuned!
