Google has been trying for quite some time now to visually refresh their products with material design. On mobile, almost every native application has been beautifully redesigned with the Marshmallow update. However, on the web, things have been moving painfully slow and we are yet to get design upgrade on all Google products. Hence, we present you “Ink” Chrome extension that brings Material overhaul to the web applications including YouTube, Contacts, Calendar and Drive.
Material Designed Google Products on Chrome
Coming from the developer behind the best app launcher, the Black Menu, “Ink” for Chrome transforms core elements of Google products to bring the consistent material design look. Although, some websites like YouTube get a completely new look with sidebars, red accents and more, other products like Gmail or Drive merely get only a revived topbar. Even the search gets an elevated top bar to provide a more sophisticated look.
Applications which are already updated with material design policies remain unaffected with the extension. For instance, Google Maps or Photos. However, there are few design tweaks that make them more colorful and visually appealing. I personally adore the Keep notes website modifications as it now has more natural visuals than before.
The extension also lets you enable or disable itself for any particular website. To do so, hit the little paint bucket on top and there you’ll find the “Enable on this site” switch.
Flag settings to Enable Material Design in Chrome
In case, you want Chrome to look Material along with other Google products, you can do so with experimental flags.
First, copy the below URL and paste it in the address bar. Hit the Enter button to open Chrome’s flag settings page.
chrome://flags/
Now, press Ctrl+F and type Material to search for all settings and enable them. Here are the ones present in latest version –
1. Material design in the browser’s top chrome
2. Enable material UI for PDF
3. Enable Material Design policy page
4. Enable Material Design downloads
Conclusion
Go ahead and install this free Ink Chrome extension. Google will definitely release official upgrades to their products, which might feel more superior than this. Until then, you’re gonna have to make your peace with this.
