Scrapped Windows 10 Update Available Again After Privacy Issues Fixed

Microsoft has come clean about the action it recently took to pull the eagerly anticipated first major Windows 10 Update

According to Microsoft, the Windows 10 Update for November in its original form might have reset four important privacy settings back their original default settings, but without informing the user the changed had been applied

Concerns were raised when Microsoft initially de-listed the November update from the Media Creation Tool (MCT).

The MCT is one of the fastest and easiest ways to do perform a completely clean install of Windows 10 with the latest Windows 10 Updates already applied. Using the MCT to install Windows 10 also removed the sometime cumbersome and time consuming process of of having to download Windows 10 Updates after installing Windows 10.

Windows 10

It wasn’t until the Windows 10 Update for November  was also de-listed on the ordinary updates page as well that eyebrows were fully raised by many, however.

Many Windows 10 users already circumspect of what Microsoft does and doesn’t in regards to user privacy, Microsoft are also keenly aware that any changes they make to privacy settings are being closely watched. Pulling the the Windows 10 November Update was probably a really smart move on their part.

“Recently we learned of an issue that could have impacted an extremely small number of people who had already installed Windows 10 and applied the November update,” Microsoft stated. ‘It will not impact future installs of the November update, which is available today.”

The Windows 10 update has now been fully restored and users should now have had these particular privacy concerns firmly put to bed.

For those who are interested, the four settings in question were:

  • Let apps use my advertising ID,
  • Turn on SmartScreen Filter for web content,
  • Let apps run in the background and,
  • Sync with devices.

And for those people who may have already installed the November update (Version 1511),  before it got yanked, can check whether their privacy settings have been altered  by going to Settings, Privacy and then changing the following options:

  • Select General to adjust the advertising ID and SmartScreen Filter.
  • Select Other devices to adjust your Sync with devices settings.
  • Select Background apps to review the applications set to run in the background.

Microsoft have stressed that only a ‘small number’ of users should have been affected by the the Windows 10 Update.

From hoverboards to adult onesies: the gifts we’re searching for this holiday

If your holiday shopping plan this season involves grabbing a spare minute on your phone to hunt for presents while you’re standing in line or on the train to work, you’re not alone. More than half of holiday shoppers say they plan to use their smartphones in free moments throughout the day to get their holiday list done. As we wake up to what has become the day for online deal hunting—Cyber Monday—we took a look at the top gifts trending on Google Search to help you shop smarter in those spare moments. Here’s a look at online shopping search trends across the U.S., to give you ideas of what your loved ones might like to find under the tree.

Drones are now toys: Drones are no longer expensive playthings for the tech-savvy. Search for “toy drone” and you’ll find countless inexpensive, easy-to-use devices available from department stores and toy stores. And they’re popular—nationwide, shopping searches for drones are up 80% over the past year, and they’re highest in California.

Hoverboards are real, and they’re trending: While we’re on the topic of electronic toys, hoverboards are so popular this year they’ve even overtaken searches for drones. They may not be exactly like the boards from Back to the Future or the Lexus commercial, but these two-wheeled boards have become a hot toy this season. Searches for “hoverboards” started trending in the summer and are up more than 500% since July.

Holiday onesies are the new “ugly Christmas sweaters”: Last year “ugly Christmas sweaters” were all the rage. This year we’re seeing holiday onesies are the new kitsch partywear of choice, as searches for “adult onesies” are trending even faster than searches for “ugly Christmas sweater.” (Hey—we don’t try to explain these trends. We just report them. -Ed.)

Your 90s wardrobe is BACK: Bomber jackets. Levi jeans. Adidas Superstars. Looking at this year’s top-trending apparel list you’ll be forgiven for thinking we’ve gone back to the 90s. Not only have we seen searches for these 90s fashion trends more than double over the past year, each city has their own 90s fashion item of choice—shoppers in Chicago are more interested in Levis while shoppers in New York are on the hunt for Adidas Superstar shoes.

“Smart” devices top electronics searches: With more models on the market than ever, both smart watches and smart TVs topped our list of trending electronics this year—with “smart watch” searches seeing a particularly phenomenal growth, up nearly 300% compared to last year. But as smart devices get more popular, retro electronics are also making a comeback: searches for instant cameras like “Polaroid Camera” and “Fujifilm Instax” have been rising steadily in popularity each holiday season.

So there you have it. Ready to start shopping? To help you search for these gifts quickly and easily while on-the-go, we recently redesigned Google Shopping on mobile. And for more insights behind this season’s trends, check out the Shopping Insights tool. Happy deal-hunting!

How IoT Medical Devices Are Vulnerable To Hackers

It’s a story straight out of a cyberthriller, a haunting tale in which hackers take over someone’s insulin pump and deliver too much of the normally life-saving drug, killing him with the very device that was supposed to save him. It makes for good crime novel fodder, but one doctor is on a mission to make sure it doesn’t become a reality.

enterprise tech

As the Internet of Things has given unparalleled connectivity to our everyday devices and appliances, new privacy and security concerns crop up all the time. For Dr. David Klonoff, the concern is that the cloud-based capabilities of new medical advances means they’re vulnerable to anyone with the skills to infiltrate them. And with everything from the aforementioned insulin meter to pacemakers that regulate heartbeat going digital and connected, nothing is scarier than a cybercriminal with the ability to alter the way your body functions.

According to an article for Wired.com, Dr. Klonoff’s first order of business is to secure insulin pumps. While the pump itself is not automated in terms of delivery of the insulin and therefore still requires the human patient to administer the amount, its subcutaneous glucose monitor is connected to the cloud in order to let doctors or minor patients’ parents access the readings. In nightmarish theory, a hacker could tell the patient via the glucose monitor that his reading is higher or lower than it actually is, and then cause him to administer a life-threatening dose or withhold needed amounts of insulin.

Privacy experts have warned that we’re too quick to engage our devices in ways that threaten our personal data security, but this realization on the part of Dr. Klonoff marks one of the first plausibly major concerns–outside of Hollywood blockbusters, of course–that our IoT devices can actually cause us physical harm. We’ve been so focused on the dangers of a self-driving car plowing through a crowded parking lot that we forgot to concern ourselves with the personal devices we blithely turn over to the cloud. Fortunately, Klonoff’s goal at this point in time is in writing the standards for how our IoT medical devices must be configured in order to be safe enough to live with while still functioning with their intended purposes.

Convicted Software Pirate ‘Jakub F’ Needs 200,000 YouTube Views!

Convicted software pirate, ‘Jakub F,’ has been given one of the weirdest punishments ever seen in a copyright infringement case…

In order to avoid a more severe punishment, and because he was unable pay damages, the presiding judge in the case ordered him to make an anti-piracy video…that he had to star in.

For want of a better phrase, the ‘Public Service’ video had to gain 200,000 views on YouTube or Jakub F would be liable for a substantial fine, that he was financially unable to pay. The alternative, presumably was jail.

The convicted pirate, known only a Jakub F also has the dubious honor of being the Czech Republic’s only  convicted software pirate.

Jakub F

Jakub F was found guilty of sharing multiple  illegal copies of Windows and various  other copyrighted software via file hosting  websites and forums over an 8 year period.

Several heavyweight companies were listed as having grievances in the case against Jakub F, including HBO, 20th Century Fox, and Microsoft. The companies, represented by the Czech Republic’s own Business Software Alliance (BSA), claimed that Jakub F had caused them financial damages of over $370,000.

However, as the BSA could only estimate the losses they had incurred as a result of Jakub F’s wrongdoings, the court was reluctant to agree or accept  an exact figure for damages.

Whatever his financial liabilities, and because Jakub F seemed to have profited little, the BSA  “reached an out-of-court settlement with rights holders that allowed him to pay a smaller fine and make up the rest by creating a video that raises awareness of software piracy.”

The catch? The video had to clock in over 200,000 in  views in 2 months in order for Jakub F to not  receive any further punishment, and only  pay a substantially reduced fine.

Jakub F was assisted in his endeavour by a professional film crew, and despite the fact that the video is shot entirely in the Czech language, its tone and message are abundantly clear. The video was uploaded onto YouTube on the 22nd November.

The video, starring Jakub F himself, is apparently, a faithful reproduction of his pirating life from beginning to arrest. The video is called ‘The Story of my Piracy.’

The good people over at Torrentfreak though have however translated part of Jakub F’s appeal into English.

“I had to start this site because for eight years I spread pirated software and then they caught me. I thought that I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I thought that it didn’t hurt the big companies. I didn’t even do it for the money, I did it for fun….“I felt in the warez community that I meant something. I was convinced that I was too small a fish for someone to get to me. But eventually, they got me. Even for me, the investigators came to work.”

At the time of writing, Jakub F had managed to reach over 320,000 views, rising from just over 220,000 views in just a few hours. This is most likely dues to the fact that several tech websites and news organizations today began to run Jakub F’s story.

Jakub F’s video can be viewed here.
