EA Sports Ignite, the Next-Gen Game Engine
Electronic Arts is keeping very busy these days, to the great joy of hardcore gamers everywhere. Besides developing hoards of new titles, the world’s third largest gaming company has also revealed a new engine for next generation platforms, EA Sports Ignite.
The Ignite was officially unveiled at the Xbox One event last week, where it left sports game fans drooling. According to EA Sports executive VP Andrew Wilson, the new engine was designed so as to further blur the line between the real world and the virtual one.
EA has already released a trailer showcasing the new engine’s capabilities. The trailer covers all of the new titles that the gaming company is developing around the Ignite engine: FIFA, NBA Live, UEFA and Madden NFL. These four new titles will be available for Microsoft’s new console Xbox One and for Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 4 in the next 12 months.
Capable of performing four times more calculations per second, the Ignite promises an unprecedented amount of detail, incredible graphics and animations and ten times more depth. The engine will further enrich the sports gaming experience by allowing for dynamic sidelines and 3D crowds.
The new engine uses human like intelligence and true player motion to offer an enhanced, immersive gaming experience and more intelligent AI. Athletes in the game will be capable of advanced decision-making and lifelike motion capacities – players will be able to smoothly change the characters’ direction and speed.
Wilson explained that EA Sports put several years of work and investment in the new engine, with the purpose of delivering an unprecedented degree of accuracy and realism. And judging by what we’ve seen in the launch trailer, they succeeded.
The EA Sports Ignite does a very fine job of further blurring the line between the real and the virtual. So much that you may sometimes need a magnifying glass to tell the difference. Together with next-generation consoles, the new engine will literally make games come alive, offering players a significantly more emotional and entertaining experience.
Check out the amazing trailer and let us know what you think of EA Sports’ new game engine in the comments below:

Tour Highest Peak with Mount Everest 3D App
How would you like to take a tour of Mount Everest without having to leave the comfort of your own house? Okay, this may not be something passionate mountain hikers would be pleased about, but it sure sounds appealing to the rest of us.
A new iOS app called Mount Everest 3D lets users take a close look at the world’s tallest mountain in eye-popping 3D, from any possible angle. And you won’t risk freezing to death either.
Mount Everest 3D was created by a German company called 3D RealityMaps. The application is based on high resolution WorldView satellite images and allows users to view various ascending routes, along with weather stations and base camps.
Using touch gestures on their iOS device, users will be able to navigate the mountain and view it in great detail from any perspective, in photorealistic quality, according to the official Mount Everest 3D website. The touch interface enables users to rotate and zoom the image and follow some of the most popular routes to the peak.
The application also offers detailed information about the weather on the mountain, along with a 2D view if you start feeling dizzy.
The Mount Everest 3D app was designed with the help of satellite imagery based on technology generally used for detailed space exploration. The interactive virtual tour it offers gives viewers access to highly accurate 3D images of the mountain, for a highly entertaining and realistic experience.
The application can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store (in German), but it does contain some in-app purchases that allow users to download info and maps to use without Internet connection. Onboard maps are $5.99.
And if you don’t own an iOS device, do not despair! You can still view Mount Everest in high resolution 3D on the Everest 3d website. All you have to do is download the free 3D RealityMaps software, install it and then lie back and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

Investing in a South African solar project
View Jasper Power Project in a larger map
Just as compelling are the economic and social benefits that the project will bring to the local community. Jasper will create approximately 300 construction and 50 permanent jobs in a region experiencing high rates of unemployment, as well as providing rural development and education programs and setting aside a portion of total project revenues—amounting to approximately $26 million over the life of the project—for enterprise and socio-economic development. We appreciate how forward-thinking the South African government has been in designing the REIPPPP to encourage these kinds of local economic benefits.
Google has committed more than $1 billion to renewable energy investments and we continue to search for new opportunities. Our search has brought us from the U.S. to Europe and now to Africa. We’re excited to see where else it might lead.

Keep Your Pet Happy with Petcube
Pet owners who always worry about what their cat or dog are doing all alone at home will be thankful for this new gadget. The Petcube is a cube-shaped device with a built-in webcam and speaker that lets you check in on your pet and talk to it, wherever you are.
Similar devices already exist on the market, but the Petcube, designed by a Ukrainian startup, has this little extra feature that makes it so much more interesting: it has a built-in laser that lets you play with your pet remotely.
The 4 inch aluminum and glass cube has an elegant, neutral look that makes it easily fit any interior. When mass production starts, users will have the option of choosing various skins for the device.
Inside the Petcube is a wide-angle 720p camera offering users a live feed of their home, plus a set of speakers and microphone to hear your pet and be able to talk to it or call it into camera range.
The device connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi and comes with an accompanying application for iOS or Android to allow users to check on their pet with the help of their smartphone.
The built-in low intensity laser is placed on a movable platform, so you’ll be able to play with your pet as if you were playing a video game, controlling the red dot and making your cat or dog chase it madly around the house. Developers say they consulted with veterinarians who confirmed that the low intensity laser is safe and will not affect your pet’s eyes even in case of direct contact.
The Petcube app will let you to take photos of your pet and share them with friends and family. You will also be able to allow other people access to your device so as to view and play with your pet when you’re not able to, and vice versa.
Developers say they will begin mass production of the device this fall, when they also plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign. No pricing details are available yet.

Linkbot Lets You Create Your Own Robots
Have you always wanted to be a robotics expert, but didn’t actually manage to pull in all the necessary skills and patience? The Linkbot modular robotic platform can help: it allows users to build their own robot any way they want it, piece by piece.
Manufactured by California-based firm Barobo, the Linkbot was first designed by a mechanical and aerospace engineering professor and ex graduate student from UC Davis.
The Linkbot is ready to use out of the box, as a single bot. But what makes it unique is its limitless capability to expand. The system can be extended infinitely and paired with all sorts of accessories, including wheels, legs, grippers, and camera mounts.
This feature is due to the fact that three of the Linkbot’s faces are provided with mounting surfaces. The mounting surfaces are also equipped with bolt patterns, allowing for enhanced attachment capabilities to create your very own customized robot.
All of the current accessories for the Linkbot are 3D printed. For advanced users, Barobo has made available all 3D models on its website, for download and printing at home. Moreover, you can create your own designs and upload them on the website in order to share with other users.
If you’re not an experienced programmer or don’t have too much time to spend coding, you’ll absolutely love the Pose Teach feature. This feature allows you to program robot motions by hand, on the outside, similar to stop-motion animation. The Linkbot will automatically translate your adjustments to code. Another nice feature is the BumpConnect, which helps create wireless connections between the robotic modules by simply touching them together.
The Linkbot weighs only 10 oz and is powered by a Li-on battery that runs for three hours before needing a recharge. The bot’s polycarbonate housing makes for a durable little gadget that can survive drops and withstand hard testing. It is provided with an Atmel VVR microcontroller with an integrated radio transceiver of 2.4GHz plus wireless capabilities. A buzzer, multicolor LEDs, a 3-axis accelerometer and control buttons add to the bot’s features.
The Linkbot modular robotic platform is now on Kickstarter, with a $40,000 target. All those interested in getting their hands on this cool bot can get a prototype plus software and MyBarobo community access for a pledge of $169.

Is Yahoo Looking To Make Waves In The Gaming Scene?
Yahoo is undeniably a member of the old guard of the Internet, but recent changes in the company has resulted in lots of noise both within and without. From acquiring mobile news aggregator Summly to extending its revenue per search agreement with Microsoft to acquiring Tumblr (which may or may not have a porn problem) – Yahoo and its execs have certainly been busy.
But they’re not done yet. The most recent acquisition is PlayerScale, a startup developer of infrastructure software for – guess what? – cross-platform gaming. PlayerScale has announced the acquisition itself on the homepage.
Today is a great day — both in our journey with PlayerScale and for users of our Player.IO product. We are happy to announce the next big step toward our goal of building the best possible gaming infrastructure platform: we have been acquired by Yahoo!. And don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere. Our platform will continue to support the same great games that you love playing today … and in fact, it will only get better from here!
Yahoo has done the same and reassures developers that the platform won’t be killed.
But what does this mean for the average online citizen?
In order to go there, you have to understand exactly what PlayerScale has been doing. You might not have heard of it before, but PlayerScale provides tools that mobile games use. To date, it is said that there are 150 million users “dependent” on these tools that games use, both on iOS and Android.
That being said, it is rather logical to think that Yahoo is looking at making a dent in the mobile gaming scene, isn’t it? Then again, what niche is Yahoo overlooking these days? Aside from the acquisitions mentioned in the opening of this post, Yahoo has taken over Stamped, OnTheAir, Snip.it, and even to-do app Astrid!
Yahoo may not have the glory it had back in the day, but it sure is extended its tentacles yet again. And the gaming scene may not be left untouched.

Helios Bars: Turn Your Bike into a Smart Bike
Changing the way your bike works forever, here come the Helios Bars: a modern, elegant set of handlebars that add a lot of smart features to the traditional bicycle.
The Helios Bars are presented as the world’s first integrated blinker and headlight system for bikes, fitting almost any bicycle and being very easy to install. They are probably also the first handlebars to use GPS and Bluetooth 4.0 to transform your bike into a smart bike.
The handlebars are equipped with three built-in LEDs – a frontal one and two on the sides, that act like blinkers to signal when the cyclist wants to make a turn. The cyclist just has to press a button to activate the LED on either side.
Users will be able to choose what color they want for the LED lights, through the accompanying iOS application. The LEDs will also change color to indicate your speed, as part of an innovative visual speedometer system that uses your smartphone’s GPS. For example, speeds of 0 to 10 mph would be indicated by the LEDs turning red, while speeds of 30 to 40 mph would turn the lights blue.
The LED system can also interact with Google Maps API to support turn by turn navigation. This way, your rear lights will be able to indicate when a turn is approaching.
Another cool feature is the proximity lighting system. Using Bluetooth 4.0 to communicate with your iPhone, the headlight will automatically turn on when you are near the bike and off when you are away.
The Helios Bars are also equipped with a GPS module with which you can track the location of your bike anywhere across the United States. So if your bike has been stolen, all you have to do to find out its location is to send it a text message. You will get an automatic reply with a Google Maps link that shows your bike’s location.
As for battery life, the handlebars can function up to 7 hours before needing to be recharged. The GPS module has a separate battery that lasts up to 15 days.
The Helios Bars are currently on Kickstarter, where the campaign has already exceeded its $70,000 goal. Manufacturers are expected to start first shipments in December. Backers who pledge $199 can get the bars in white or black, while higher pledges of $249 come with a wider range of color options.
