ARCore SDK Helps Improve Augmented Reality for Andorid
Augmented Reality is the future of smartphone technologies. We have seen what it is capable of in Snapchat filters and games like Pokemon Go, but this is just the tip of the iceberg and much of it is yet to be explored. Google has today introduced a new Software Development Kit which would help Augmented Reality step up for the Android platform. Let us take a closer look at the ARCore SDK and what it has to offer:
ARCore SDK Preview Announced By Google
Google has been working on Augmented Reality for the past three years with projects such as Project Tango. ARCore is the result of these years of research. The best part about this SDK is that it does not need any additional hardware to build upon and can be scaled upon the Android OS itself.
The ARCore SDK will be supported by Millions of smartphones and the support goes live today. As of now this Software Development Kit is supported on the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S8. Google is working in collaboration with other OEMs such as Samsung, Huawei, LG and ASUS among others to bring in support for more devices.
Top Features of the ARCore SDK:
This SDK works with OpenGL, Unity and Unreal. Here are the top three features of ARCore which make it really special:
- Motion Tracking: ARCore makes use of the phone’s camera to observe feature points in the room. It knows the position of the phone as well as the orientation of the phone as it moves.
- Deeper Understanding of the Environment: AR objects can be placed in any angle. They might be hanging from your fan or lying on your table or flat on your floor. The ARCore SDK can detect horizontal surfaces by making use of feature points.
- Light Estimate: This SDK also understands the ambient lighting in context with the environment and allows the developers to make sure the object looks more realistic.
The ARCore Software Development Kit can be downloaded here.

Find Parking in Google Maps!
A feature which was being tested in the beta version of Google Maps for a while now, Google has finally rolled it out to the stable version of the app. Users who use Google Maps in select cities would now be able to find parking in Google Maps. Parking is unpredictable and often a pain in the neck. However, not for Google Maps users. It is quiet easy to find parking in Google Maps –
- Once you have set your location, expand the directions card which appears on the bottom of the main screen.
- In the expanded card, you would see a section on the top named ‘Parking’. There’s a ‘Find Parking’ link beneath it. Tap it.
- You will now be able to see a list of parking lots and garages near the area where you are going.
- Not only can you find parking in Google Maps, but also a walkable route to your destination!
Moreover, Google Maps also shows ‘parking difficulty’ which is based on historic data. You know beforehand what kind of a rush you might encounter when you reach the destination.

How to Get the Best Travel Deals from Google Flights and Hotel Search
Google knows you love to travel! The company has often posted travel tips on their blogs, giving the users the best ways to make use of Google to ensure they get the best possible travel experience. Google has now introduced a number of new features to Google Flights and Hotel Search which would allow the users to get the best possible deals. Interested in getting the best travel deals from Google? Here’s how:
Google Flights and Hotel Search: Get The Best Travel Deals from Google!
Google Flights allows the users to look up for flights, book them, as well as track them via Google Search. However, things take a step up with Google’s latest update. Google Flights now allows the users to take a look at a travel fare calendar where they would be able to see on which dates they get the lowest airfare and on which days they get the highest airfare. Google wants you to get the best deals on flights, and this calendar does make things easier!
Similarly, Google has also introduced a new function for the Hotel Search feature, which allows the users to look up hotels reservation fares in a calendar view so that they can book on the date where they are getting the best deals on hotel prices. Google also offers a price trends analysis which users could make use of to see how prices change over time and make bookings accordingly.
Another travel planning tip that Google gives users in their latest post is that it is advisable to look up for alternate airports. Some cities tend to have multiple nearby airports. Google gives the example of New York, which has 10 airports in the radius of a three hour drive, which are often cheaper than a direct flight. Google Maps now allows the users to look for nearby airports – thereby making it easier for users to check alternate airfares for these airports.

YouTube Gets a Major Design Overhaul: Here’s the New YouTube UI
For over 12 years, YouTube has been the go-to website for all your visual content needs. The website is the home to the biggest collection of videos in the world. The popular website has now received a major redesign which matches the modern day web and design standards. Let us take a closer look at this new and improved YouTube UI.
New YouTube UI for Mobile App Users
- Changes to App Design: The navigation tabs of the app have now been moved to the bottom. This makes it easier to navigate with just the thumbs. Keeping in mind that modern day smartphones tend to feature large displays, this change to the YouTube UI is a good move.
- Video Gestures: An upcoming feature which will allow the users to switch between the next and previous videos by swiping over the video.
- Playback Speed: Users of YouTube’s desktop website get to fast forward or slow down the video playback – a feature which is now live on the YouTube mobile app too.
- Adapting to Video Size: No matter what orientation and resolution a video is shot at, the YouTube mobile app will automatically adjust to adapt to the size of the video.
New YouTube UI for Desktop Users
The YouTube UI for desktop users too, has been redesigned. In it’s blog post, YouTube states that they have now introduced the material design style to the website. It offers a fresh and simple, easy to use interface. One of the highlights of the new YouTube UI for desktop users is the ‘Dark Theme’ which turns the background black, offering the users a more cinematic experience.
Finally, the iconic YouTube logo too has been redesigned. As seen in the GIF image above, the portion under the red box has now come out, and the red box now encapsulates a triangular ‘play’ logo. This is a very ‘2017’ design from YouTube and is indeed a welcome change. Do you like this change to the YouTube app, website and logo? Comment below and let us know!
