In the wake of Sandy, technology companies are going all out when it comes to relief efforts. From text-message donations to cooperation in providing services to customers, recovery is under way. As the above photo of Hoboken, New Jersey, shows, help cant come soon enough. A little money goes a long way Donations via text messages are a popular way to easily give money to charities in need. At least four different groups are using this method to raise money in $10 increments for recovery efforts, which appear as a charge on the texter's bill. Those interested in donating to the American Red Cross should text "REDCROSS" to 90999; texting "STORM" to 80888 helps the Salvation Army. Two animal charities are also asking for help: texting "HUMANE" to 80088 donates $10 to the American Humane Society, while texting "PREVENT" assists the ASPCA. Microsoft sued over use of live tiles in Windows

Microsoft has been slapped with a patent infringement lawsuit over its use of dynamic "live" tile icons in Windows, including in the newly launched Windows 8 OS for PCs and tablets and in the Windows Phone 8 OS for smartphones. SurfCast, based in Portland, Maine, filed its lawsuit on Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, and is asking for Microsoft to pay an undetermined amount of money in damages and attorneys' fees. At issue is U.S. Patent 6,724,403, titled "System and Method for Simultaneous Display of Multiple Information Sources," which SurfCast was awarded in 2004. SurfCast takes issue with Windows' use of live tiles, which are rectangular or square icons in the Start screen of new Windows versions that provide links to applications, websites, contacts and other elements. SurfCast describes itself on its website as a designer of OS technology. It claims to have developed the live tile technology in the 1990s. A Halloween treat for Linux and Mac users: CrossOv

Whatever your take on the relative proportions of the desktop market accounted for by Mac and Linux users, the fact remains that there are still an awful lot of applications out there that target Windows. One solution for getting Windows software to run on these other platforms is the free and open source Wine compatibility layer, as I noted when Wine 1.4 was released earlier this year. Another option—as I also noted back then—is CrossOver, a paid version of the software thats available with support from CodeWeavers. Normally, CrossOver is priced at $59.95 with 12 months of email support and upgrades and one free phone support incident. This year, however, Halloween is Linux and Mac users lucky day, because just for today, CodeWeavers is giving out its CrossOver product for free. Malware infects 13 percent of North American home

Some 13 percent of home networks in North America are infected with malware, half of them with "serious" threats, according to a report released Wednesday by a cyber-security company. However, that number is a one-percent decrease from the quarter that ended in June, according to Kindsight Security Labs, of Mountain View, California, in its third-quarter malware report [PDF]. Based on information gathered from service providers, Kindsight reported that 6.5 percent of the home network infections were high-level threats that could turn a home computer into a spam-spewing zombie on a botnet or compromise a computer owners bank account. ZeroAccess botnet Some 2.2 million home networks worldwide are infected with malware controlled by the ZeroAccess botnet, the report estimated. Comcast offers free Wi-Fi in the wake of Sandy

Comcast will offer use of its Wi-Fi network free of charge to those hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy, the cable and Internet provider said on Wednesday. The network, which is typically free for unlimited use by those with an Xfinity Internet account, is now open to the public through November 7. Hotspots in Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. are part of the offer. A list of these hotspots can be found using Xfinity's Wi-Fi coverage map available from the Comcast website. Comcast's hotspots can be found both indoors and outdoors in parks, public places, public transportation, and shopping malls. The cable provider operates some 50,000 of these hotspots across the country, mostly across the Northeast and in California. To use the free Wi-Fi, look for the "xfinitywifi" network at a participating hotspot. On the page that pops up after connecting, look for the link that says "Not a Comcast Subscriber?" toward the bottom of the page. Click it, then select "Complementary Trial Session."
