5 Linux Releases to Expect in the Near Future
The next couple of months are going to be interesting as far as Linux fans and users are concerned. The open source platform has a number of releases lined up which are going to be rolled out in the next few days and weeks. There are several different distributions the users would be waiting eagerly for. Here is an overview of the 5 Linux releases to expect in the near future.
Linux Mint – Cinnamon
A cinnamon flavored mint can only be found in the Linux world and you will find it in the upcoming edition of Debian. The Mint Debian Edition 201303 can be used with the Cinnamon and MATE desktop environments. There is no official release date announced for this distribution but it is being made available as a Release Candidate (RC). In fact, users have downloading it is an RC for the past month or so.
Korora 18
Korora is to Fedora what Ubuntu is to Mint. That is to say that you can see the influence of Linux Fedora in Korora. The start was pretty basic for Korora but over time a number of great features have been added to the distribution to make it stand out from the rest. The Beta version for Korora 18 is available. One thing users would notice about the new version is that an ‘A’ has been dropped from the name of the distribution previously known as Kororaa. No release date has been announced yet for it.
OpenSuSE 12.3 KDE
One of the Linux releases already available, the OpenSuSE 12.3 KDE was launched on March 13 having been released as an RC2 before that. Compared to the previous version, 12.2, the 12.3 KDE has enjoyed smoother progress through development to release. This one is said to work equally well on laptops and netbooks should you feel like installing it on multiple devices.
Mageia 3 KDE
The Mageia 3 KDE preceded OpenSuSE 12.3 by a couple of days and is available for release. However, it did encounter a number of obstacles in the development phase. This was the reason it missed the original release date which had been announced for it. Also, it took an extra beta testing phase to make it ready for release before it was finally launched. The wait was worth the while as the Mageia 3 KDE is great to use.
Wheezy
Wheezy has seen one of the most event-free developments of a Debian distribution so far. The Debian GNU 7.0 is up for release soon and already available to certain users. The criticism for Debian distributions that they are too few and far between continues with Wheezy as well. Unlike Ubuntu which has at least two releases a year, Debian distributions are spread out with as much as a year in between.
These are five of the Linux releases you can expect in the near future. Nearly all of them are available to you in one form or another so you can get your hands on them right away should be interested.

Global Impact Awards’ hunt for U.K.’s most innovative social entrepreneurs starts today
Last year, we launched the Global Impact Awards to support nonprofits using technology to tackle some of the world’s toughest problems. We gave $23 million to seven organizations working on projects ranging from aerial technology that protects wildlife to data algorithms that ensure more girls and minorities get placed in advanced math and science classes.
Today, as the next step in the Impact Awards, we’re kicking off our first Global Impact Challenge in the U.K., inviting British nonprofits to tell us how they would use technology to transform lives. Four nonprofits will each receive a £500,000 Global Impact Award, as well as Chromebooks and technical assistance from Googlers to help make their project a reality.
Applications open today, and registered British nonprofits are invited to apply online at g.co/impactchallenge. We’ll review applications and announce 10 finalists on May 22. At that point, people across the U.K. can learn more about the projects of the top 10 finalists, donate to the ones they like and cast a vote for fan favorite. On June 3, the top 10 finalists will pitch their concepts to a judging panel that includes us (Matt Brittin and Jacquelline Fuller), Sir Richard Branson, Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Jilly Forster. The three awardees and the fan favorite will be revealed at the event, which will take place at Google London.
Technology can help solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges and we’re eager to back innovators who are finding new ways to make an impact. Today we’re starting the hunt in the U.K., but we also know that nonprofits all over the world are using techy approaches to develop new solutions in their sector.
