Razer Blade: The Ultra Thin Gaming Laptop

Razer, the PC peripherals manufacturer, are making bold moves to break away from the current gaming-laptop pattern. They have announced the release of something slim and light that still packs plenty of gaming prowess.

The new Razer Blade is a gaming laptop that is just 0.66 inches. It will run on Intel’s Haswell quadcore CPU in the same way as Razer Pro refresh. CEO of Razer, Min-Liang Tan (pictured below), said that they took inspiration from the thinness and lightness of the MacBook Air and power of the Alienware M14X. By combining them into a single reference point, they hope to achieve an ultra-portable gaming system. Tan summed up the new release saying “In a single sentence, it’s the world’s thinnest gaming laptop. It’s impossibly thin, insanely powerful and designed just for gaming.”

Razer Blade: The Ultra Thin Gaming Laptop

It is certainly light at 4.135 pounds but depite this it still supports Intel 4th gen CPU, a GTX 765M GPU and comes with 128GB SSD as standard but it can be configured with 256GB or 512GB. The screen is 14-inches and the 16:9 matte display has a 1,600×900-pixel resolution. However, this isn’t a touch screen!

The OS of choice is Windows 8, while the battery is aimed to last six hours. Tan explains, the company got rid of all the superfluous hardware to keep the Razer Blade powerful yet light and slender.

This is not a cheap piece of kit. It will set you back $1,799. However seeing as you can carry it around with you everywhere in your backpack, maybe it’s worth it?! The question is will the current trend for touch design be missed? Share your comments below.

Call of Juarez Gunslinger Is a Fun Western Shooter

The fourth installment in the Call of Juarez franchise, Call of Juarez Gunslinger makes up for developer Techland’s past mistakes, offering gamers a fun shooting adventure back in the Wild West setting we all loved in the previous episodes.

The previous installment, Call of Juarez: The Cartel, was released in 2011. The game unfortunately moved away from the franchise’s established setting, transitioning to modern-day Mexico. The result was an awkward, out of place game that left fans disappointed.

Call of Juarez Gunslinger Is a Fun Western Shooter

But with Gunslinger, Techland and publisher Ubisoft managed to redeem the entire series. The game is a pretty straightforward first person shooter, with three modes that are all very entertaining: story, arcade and duel.

The gameplay is neat and comfortable, with nice graphics and incredibly good and convincing voice acting. As with previous episodes, players will have to complete various objectives to progress, earning experience points with which they can level up skills and specialize in using a particular kind of weapons, dual pistols, rifles or shotguns.

The shooting is also insanely rewarding, it is incredible how much fun you can have taking bloody headshots and picking your foes one by one. Especially in arcade mode, you will have nothing else to do except shooting, as the idea is to kill as many enemies as possible in order to get a high score. It may sound boring, but trust us, Gunslinger executes this very well, offering a very engaging, tight shooting experience that will leave you wanting for more.

But the great charm of the game lies in the fact that it does not take itself seriously. This jesting attitude is best exemplified by the lead character, bounty hunter Silas Greaves, who is an unreliable narrator. The entire story is actually driven by this fact, as you will have to play through different accounts of the same event, as Greaves recounts them.

Greaves packs his story with lies and inconsistencies and as his audience calls him out, the game environment changes around you. This results in strange events: enemies disappear mid-story and you may even have to go back to the start on some missions to see what actually happened.

This smart gameplay technique will keep you engaged and amused during the five-to-seven hour story mode campaign, even if sometimes you will have to play through the same level with only minor variations. The game offers two separate endings, so we recommend playing through the last mission twice, to see both.

All in all, Call of Juarez Gunslinger is a highly entertaining Western shooter that is quite a breath of fresh air for the genre. The game is out now, for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

New Waterproof Fabric Can Drain Sweat

This summer, we may have one thing less to worry about. Okay, maybe not this summer, but very soon, we’ll be able to say goodbye to those uncomfortable patches of sweat, as scientists have discovered a new waterproof fabric that can drain your perspiration and keep you dry.

The new fabric acts pretty much like human skin: it forms droplets of sweat that can easily drain away instead of just soaking it up like all conventional fabrics.

New Waterproof Fabric Can Drain Sweat

The inventor, UC Davis biomedical engineering professor Tingrui Pan explained that the new fabric is part of a field of research known as microfluidics. The research focuses on developing lab on a chip devices, which manipulate fluids by using tiny channels. The technique is developed for various applications, including medical diagnostic tests.

That sounds like a lot of fancy science talk so let’s see what it actually means for the new waterproof fabric. In developing the new textile material, scientists used water-attracting threads which they stitched into a water-repellant fabric. This gave birth to thread patterns that actually suck in water on one side of the fabric and propel it out through the other side.

Meaning that the technology is similar to a water-pump, only that it works almost instantaneously, keeping the fabric dry. Even when the water attracting threads are soaked, the system keeps on pumping the water out due to the pressure generated by the water drops on the surface of the fabric.

What’s even more interesting is that it is possible to control where the fabric collects the sweat and the where it propels it out of the system. This can be achieved by changing the water conducting threads’ patterns and the manner in which they are stitched together on both sides of the fabric.

Given that this technology keeps the fabric completely dry, we expect it to find its way into clothing manufacturing pretty soon. The technique is fairly simple in terms of manufacturing, so it could be easily scaled up into larger clothing items, UC Davis scientists explained. We’re looking forward to that moment!
