Sony has pulled the latest 4.45 firmware update for the PlayStation 3 due to reports that it was causing errors for some of the consoles it was downloaded on.
In a post on the official US Playstation forum, it was reported that some consoles were “bricking” as the on-screen navigation disappeared. Sony also released a statement to the gaming website CVG, saying that they were aware of the problem and so decided to pull the update. They will however notify users as soon as the update is ready for download.
“We are aware of reports that the recent PlayStation 3 system software update (version 4.45) has caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems,” a Sony spokesperson said. “We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating the cause of the problem. We will announce when the system update is available for download as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
Understandably this has caused dismay among PS3 owners, who only last week at E3, voiced their loyalty to the console.
With the announcement of the release of the new PlayStation 4, many were pleased to hear that the console will cost $399. But despite that, it looks as though there is no planned price cut for the PS3.
Fergal Gara, Sony’s Computer Entertainment UK Managing Director said it hasn’t been particularly easy to get the costs down for the console. He said “We continue to look at opportunities, there may or may not be any more, I genuinely can’t answer to that. But it will certainly be a more keenly priced machine in relative to PlayStation 4.”
“It will sit there as a viable entry level machine for years to come. It will be different by territory as to how long its life is. There’s still a lot of love for PS3,” he added.
It’s true that there is still alot of love for the PS3, so let’s hope that they solve the update problem quickly!

Several state officials have joined forces in seeking assurance from Google following numerous privacy fears relating to Google Glass.
Privacy commissioners and data protection representatives from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Isreal, Switzerland and Mexico, just to name a few, have got together with the EU Commission’s Article 29 Working Party. They have signed an open letter to Google CEO, Larry Page, requesting to discuss whether the proper protection is in place for the public.
CEO of Google, Larry Page, needs to allay concerns over Google Glass
One concern particulary made reference to is the potential for unsuspecting passers-by to be photographed or filmed by someone using the Google Glass device without consent.
“Google Glass has been the subject of many articles that have raised concerns about the obvious, and perhaps less obvious, privacy implications of a device that can be worn by an individual and used to film and record audio of other people,” the letter reads.
“Fears of ubiquitous surveillance of individuals by other individuals, whether through such recordings or through other applications currently being developed, have been raised. Questions about Google’s collection of such data and what it means in terms of Google’s revamped privacy policy have also started to appear.”
The letter also asked for Google’s future stance on the use of facial recognition and what they plan to do with the data once it has been collected from the user.
The commissioners have requested that they be able to test the device for themselves so that they can raise any found concerns directly with Google.
