‘Candy’ Trademark Causes A Right Saga
King.com has trademarked the word ‘candy’ in order to protect its best-selling game, Candy Crush Saga. However this has caused outrage amongst gamemakers, who have sparked an online protest named Candy Jam.
The protest has resulted in game developers joining forces to create as many different games as possible that use the word ‘candy’ in the title. One hundred games have been produced so far.
Candy Jam even has its own webpage, where it explains the goal is to challenge King.com’s action, labelling the company a “bully”. Developers are being encouraged to create and submit their games to the site, using not just the word ‘candy’ in the title but also ‘saga’. King.com is rumoured to be keen on trademarking the word ‘saga’.
King has not responded to the protest website nor has it commented on the games created.
