Google’s In-Car Solution ‘Projected Mode’ Leaked

Following the news that Apple’s ‘iOS in the car’ is set to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, has revealed that Google’s in-car solution will be called ‘Projected Mode’ and that it will seamlessly integrate Android devices in the car’s dashboard.

Daimler has made these revelations through a job post seeking to employ a software engineer that can integrate the technology within its vehicles.

Android in a car

According to the post, the successful applicant will be responsible for integrating Android smartphones in to the head-unit of the car, allowing the driver to take calls, send messages, play music and use the navigation system hands free.

It is interesting that Mercedes-Benz are also supporting Apple’s CarPlay system, showing that rather than displaying loyalty to one of the two rivals, the car manufacturer wants to have wide appeal to both iOS and Android users.

Although it is not completely clear yet, it looks as though Google’s solution will be mirroring the smartphone’s display on to a larger display built in to the dashboard. With Apple set to release CarPlay this week, it will be interesting to see how its solution works in practice and may give us an idea of what to expect from Google.
