Two New Updates To Enhance Multimedia Use

When Microsoft announced it would no longer be supporting Windows Media Center in its new operating system, the public outcry was pretty loud. Longtime users who’d come to rely on the multimedia platform to fill a variety of needs were left wondering how they’d continue utilizing content.

With so many shifts in multimedia support for different operating systems, it’s good to know that other software companies have developed titles that will meet users’ needs while still maintaining some level of compatibility with their preferred networks and operating systems. Two new releases have been launched that help users nab their content online and store, enhance, and save it.

The first is BitComet, an open-source BitTorrent client that has a fast interface that supports multiple simultaneous downloads. You can download any type of multimedia file and store it for later use. While it’s not ultra-intuitive for those not already familiar with the concept, it can be a great tool for those with the right know-how.

Once you’ve gotten the files you need, Ashampoo is a great fill-in tool for playing, trimming, enhancing, storing, and burning files to any drive you need. While it’s a great way to make backups of anything–from your pictures and music to your entire hard drive–it also has the ability to let you store saved copies of your movies from disc and even convert them into Blu Ray-compatible stored discs. You even have the added option of creating your own CD or DVD covers so you can catalog what you’ve put on them for easy finding.

Adult Player Porn App Takes Secret Photos Of Users, Holds Them To Ransom.

Android Adult Player porn app entices users with explicit images but instead takes photos using smartphone’s front camera, locking the device and then holding users to ransom.

In this latest example of ‘Ransomware,’ the Adult Player app seems a legitimate enough to begin with. Unfortunately this particular porn app for Android begins to take selfies in secret. It then locks the device it was accessed on displaying one of the images and demanding $500 to unlock the smartphone. It also threatens to expose users’ private data and the delete of all data on the device.

Adult Player

The Ransomware app was discovered by US based security firm Zscaler in the course of its “daily malware hunt.” The app is activated when users inadvertently give Adult Player full admin rights the first time it is run by clicking on ‘Activate’ in order to get the app to run. This then allows Adult Player to use a technique known as a “reflection attack,” to modify and examine the smartphone device in question, which might allow the malicious app to avoid detection and analysis by security apps also installed.

Shortly after, the porn app then starts taking photos, and shortly after that the phone is locked and the ransom screen displayed. A hardware reboot does not solve the problem as the app reloads, and the ransom message remains persistent, meaning there is no way for users to uninstall the app.

How to remove the Adult Player porn app without paying $500

Fortunately for terrified and embarrassed users, there is an easy solution: ZScaler state the app can be uninstalled by doing the following:

Adult Player removal

How to not be a victim of Ransomware

Only download apps from trusted and verifiable sources such as Google Play. Adult Player is not available from Google Play. By utilising common sense, and thinking with your head, rather than your genitalia you make it hard, (excuse the pun), for malicious ransomware apps to get on your phone in the first place.

Ransomware for Smartphones continues to increase

McAfee Labs stated in their August Threats Report that instances of Ransomware had increased 127% in just one year. While Ransomware has been an issue on PC and desktop environments for some time, its presence on mobile devices is still regarded by many in the industry to be in its infancy.

Part of the reason for the increase smartphone malware according to Raj Samani of Intel, speaking to BBC News, is that “it’s very easy to make…[and]…there are people you can pay to do the work for you…”

Zscaler had previously written a blog post about similar malware for Android devices.

Dressed in code

Increasingly, the worlds of fashion and technology are becoming intertwined—from wristbands that track your heart rate to responsive fabrics that adjust to your temperature. And just like you can sew together different pieces of fabric to make a dress, or choose different items from your closet to create an unexpected outfit, you can also put together code to make something that’s never existed before.

Today, as New York’s Fashion Week kicks off, fashion and technology are coming together in a new way. Made with Code and ZAC Zac Posen are teaming up to show how computer science can push the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of fashion. A dress designed by Zac Posen and with designs coded online by teen girls will debut as the finale look of Zac’s show—and hopefully inspire young girls who have an interest in fashion to see what code can help them create.
Made with Code started with the mission of inspiring girls to try coding and to see it as a means to pursue their dream careers—regardless of what field those careers are in. For this project, girls from organizations like Black Girls Code, the Flatiron School, Girls Who Code and Lower East Side Girls Club, coded designs for an LED dress using an introductory coding project online. Fashion engineer and Made with Code mentor, Maddy Maxey, coded and fabricated the LED technology of the dress, working alongside Zac as he designed. When the dress goes down the runway, it will displays girls’ patterns in 500 LED lights, using a micro controller specially tuned to match Zac’s Spring Summer 2016 runway collection—from Catalina Blue to Acid Yellow. Meanwhile, 50 girls will get seats at the show to see their designs light up the runway.

In the past year, we’ve seen many encouraging signs that more girls are exploring computer science. More than 5 million coding projects have been tried since Made with Code began a year ago. And Googlers, teen girls and partners like Girls Inc, Technovation and Girl Scouts have thrown 300+ Made with Code parties across the U.S., reaching tens of thousands teen girls in person. But with less than one percent of high school girls still expressing interest in computer science, it’s obvious we have so much more work to do—so, let’s start now. After today, girls all over the country can also head to madewithcode.com to create their own design. We hope the digital dress inspires more teens to discover what they can make with code.
