Microsoft Cleans Up Windows Store Spam

Anyone who’s ever spent some serious time looking through the Windows Store will have noticed one issue with it in particular:

That issue of the useless spam ridden reviews that hinder us all when trying to decide if an app or program is actually any good.

You’d think that Microsoft’s own Windows Store might be one of the better policed sites, but despite having taken some steps in recent months, the problem of made up and spam laden reviews that have nothing to do with the product in question is well known for the frustrations it causes.

Windows Store

While this isn’t such a big issue for anyone wanting to install something like Facebook or Office 365, it can be a real issue for people when they try to find an app off the beaten path.

New Direction

But in a new move to improve the situation Microsoft has now decided to make it easier for developers themselves to report these irrelevant user reviews.

Microsoft have reacted in the past to the problem inherent with allowing users to leave reviews, but the speed with which they have tried to resolve issues has been somewhat lacking to say the least.

Last year, Microsoft gave app developers the ability to reply to reviews. The move was welcomed by the developer community and by genuine users, but it did not directly address the problem with spam reviews.

Previous Attempts

It was only a few short months ago, that Microsoft cleaned up the Windows Store enforcing new policies to try and reduce the number of low quality and broken apps before the Windows 10 launch. Previous to that, the company culled 1500 poor quality apps from the store as well to try and reduce the amount of low-quality and misleading apps taking up shelf space.

Different Approaches, Same Hopes

Now however, developers can highlight questionable feedback directly to the Windows Store support team, where Microsoft itself can decide whether suspect reviews violate Microsoft policies.

But this isn’t all Microsoft are doing to address the spam issue. They have also added a new anti-spam technology feature to the Windows Store.  Microsoft are confident that it will detect and delete large swathes of the spam content resident in app reviews.

Assuming both these new features taken at face value work, Windows Store users should start to see a difference very quickly. And maybe just maybe, reviews left on the Windows Store site might just become trustworthy and relevant.

Time will tell.

Navigate and search the real-world … online or off

Roughly 60 percent of the world is without Internet today, and even where online access is available, it can still be spotty. That means that quick and easy access to information is still not possible for a majority of the population. This is a huge problem, especially as people attempt to navigate and explore the world around them, so Google Maps is taking steps to help people across the globe find directions and get where they’re going, even when they don’t have an Internet connection.

Now you can download an area of the world to your phone, and the next time you find there’s no connectivity—whether it’s a country road or an underground parking garage—Google Maps will continue to work seamlessly. Whereas before you could simply view an area of the map offline, now you can get turn-by-turn driving directions, search for specific destinations, and find useful information about places, like hours of operation, contact information or ratings.
You can download an area by searching for a city, county or country, for instance, and tapping "Download" on the resulting place sheet, or by going to "Offline Areas" in the Google Maps menu and tapping on the “+” button. Once downloaded, Google Maps will move into offline mode automatically when it recognizes you’re in a location with spotty service or no connectivity at all. When a connection is found, it will switch back online so you can easily access the full version of Maps, including live traffic conditions for your current route. By default, we’ll only download areas to your device when you are on a Wi-Fi connection to prevent large data fees.
We first previewed these new capabilities during Google I/O in May, and today we’re gradually rolling out the first set of these improvements with the latest version of Google Maps on Android (coming soon to iOS). Over time, we’ll be introducing even more offline features to help you find your way—even when you can’t find a connection.

How to Link Previous Pages or Paragraphs in Google Docs

If you are a type of person who likes to organize big documents in multiple sections, then this tip is pretty helpful for your document users. How will you link your document to different sections so users can directly navigate back and forth? Or say, you want to give a reference to any previous page or paragraph. Surely your readers wouldn’t like to scroll back again.

Add ‘Back to Top’ Link or Insert Anchor points in Google Docs

For your readers convenience, you will prefer to add an anchor point or bookmark where you want readers to take reference from previous pages. For example, your reader is on page 57 and you want your reader to redirect to page 27 to emphasize on a particular section. Creating an anchor point or ‘Back to Top’ link will make it easy for them to gain reference. By doing so, you make sure your readers don’t have to use the scroll bar.

STEP 1: Place the cursor on the beginning of the headline of which you want to create the reference point. Go to ‘Insert’ and click on ‘Bookmark’.

Go to insert and select bookmark

STEP 2: Click on ‘Link’. It will create a link of the headline.

select link

STEP 3: Go to the portion where you want your readers to be redirected to the bookmark. Place the cursor where you want to create the link. Go to ‘Insert’ and click on ‘Link’.

Go to Insert and Select Link

STEP 4: A box will pop at the area. Click on link field and select bookmark. It will show you the link created previously. Select the desired link. Now enter the text for your bookmark in the text field.

Add previously created link

STEP 5: Click on apply. You will see the text in blue coloured underlined font. Your Bookmark is now created.

Reference anchor link is created

That’s all. You can use the above technique to create “Back to top” link by creating bookmarks after different sections and referring them to the top most page.
