Yahoo Sold To Verizon…

…And Yahoo Becomes Just Another Footnote In The History Of The World Wide Web.

Yes that’s right, Yahoo, the once ruling overlord of the World Wide Web has sold its core internet business properties to Verizon for $4.83 billion in cash.

The news marks an ignoble end to a company that at the height of the original dotcom bubble had the funds to spend almost $10 billion itself buying nascent competitors Broadcast.com and Geocities.

In an ironic twist of fate, Yahoo decided to pass on the opportunity to buy 2 upstart young companies when it had the chance.  Those 2 missed opportunities?  Facebook and Google….

Importantly, Yahoo has not sold off its ‘risky’ $1 billion 2005 investment in Chinese start up Alibaba.  Yahoo’s current stake is currently worth $30 billion, and the investment was so successful, that it became more profitable than the business Yahoo was in itself.  Buying shares in Alibaba is also part of the reason that Yahoo has been able to stay in business so long as it could be continually prop up its web business despite not making a profit for several years in a row.

Yahoo’s agonising belly slide to the bottom of a mountain covered in broken glass, has to say the least been painful. When former tech giants fall from grace, they really plummet.

Yahoo now has but a minor percentage of the market it once held, and in recent times, nothing it did to try and stop its nosedive into obscurity could stop its decline.

Yahoo’s own search offering now holds only a tiny percentage of the market it once did, despite final CEO, former Google Executive, Marissa Mayer doing her best to plug the leaks in the sinking ship. Not that she should be too disappointed. Reports indicate that she is in lie for a $50 million payment from the deal.

So it isn’t all bad news for the company that started life as a university project in 1994…

US Navy Sued For Software Piracy

While the irony isn’t lost on most people, the only humor in this story is that it’s a well-known and widely respected navy that has been accused of piracy. The US Navy has been served with a federal lawsuit by a German software company after more than half a million instances of illegal copying and piracy.

The eleven page legal filing outlines how the Navy entered into an agreement for virtual reality software from Bitmanagement Software. The 3D VR software, BS Contact Geo, was originally supposed to be installed on the computers, but the licensing discussion fell apart somewhere and was never completed. The lawsuit alleges that the Navy simply went ahead with copying their own versions of the purchased software, then installed it on over 558,000 computers without entering into the licensing agreement, or more importantly, paying for that licensing.

According to the suit, “In 2011 and 2012, Bitmanagement agreed to license its software to the Navy on a limited and experimental basis. Those individual PC-based licenses authorized the Navy to install BS Contact Geo on a total of just 38 computers for the purposes of testing, trial runs, and integration into Navy systems. In order to facilitate such testing and integration of the software on Navy computers in preparation for the large scale licensing desired by the Navy, it was necessary for Bitmanagement to remove the control mechanism that tracked and limited the use of the software.”

But the Navy didn’t stop with those 38 computers, and when word reached Bitmanagement from a Navy official that over half a million computers were now running the copied software, the company filed a suit for the cost of the license on that many machines, as well as interest and attorneys’ fees. The suit is for nearly $600 million for the fraudulent use alone, and could add even more should Bitmanagement be awarded the lost revenue from interest they would have earned and the associated legal fees.

Google Play Family Library: Share what you love with the ones you love

Friday night is movie night at our home, and my wife and I look forward to our weekly ritual of putting the kids to bed, getting some takeout, and catching up on our movie wishlist. Whether it’s making the BLUE STEEL face from Zoolander, swapping tips on playing Monument Valley, or reading Dragons Love Tacos to the kids at bedtime, these shared moments bring us closer together.

For families like mine, who bond over shared entertainment, we’re introducing Family Library, a way for up to six family members to share purchases on Google Play. When you buy an eligible app, game, movie, TV show, or book in the Play Store, you can now share it with your family—across devices—with no additional sign-up fee.

Share across your family’s devices
Today’s families have a lot of devices, and it should be easy to share content no matter where we are or what we’re doing. Everyone in my family loves the Star Wars movies and we all want to be able to watch them, on our phones, tablets, laptops, or TV. All purchases added to Family Library are available across Android devices, and movies, TV shows, and books can be enjoyed on iOS devices and the web.

Easily manage sharing and family purchases
As with most family matters, flexibility and choice is important. With Family Library, you can choose which items you want to share and which to keep to yourself—for example, I’ll probably keep my collection of comic books in my personal library. Flexibility is also built into your purchasing options. When you sign up, you’ll select a credit card to share as your family payment method, but your family members will always have the option of buying stuff with their personal credit cards or gift cards. And for your younger family members, you’ll have the option to approve each of their purchases.

Share a Music subscription with your family
Finally, if your family loves music, you can also subscribe to the Google Play Music family plan. On this plan, up to six family members can stream millions of songs on demand for $14.99 a month. We launched the family plan late last year, and today we’re expanding it to Ireland, Italy, Mexico, and New Zealand. And you can now sign up on the web, in addition to your Android device.

Starting today, Family Library will be rolling out over the next few days and will be available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. To get started, sign up in Google Play, invite your family members, and start sharing what you love!
