How To Find Your Android Phone With Android Device Manager

It’s a dreaded moment when you reach for your pocket and find that your phone isn’t there. You may have left it on the shop counter, dropped it in the car or may be it’s just lying on the sofa; but you have no idea where it is. If you lost your Android phone; there is no need to panic. You can still recover it using the built-in Android Device Manager.

The Android Device Manager will show you the current location of the phone and also let you send remote commands to lock or wipe your phone. In today’s post, we will show you how you can recover your android phone using Android Device Manager.

Access Android Device Manager

The Android Device Manager will only let you track your Android phone if it is already enabled in it. Fortunately, the Android Device Manager is enabled by default on all the Android devices, so there is a chance it is enabled on your device as well.

In case you are planning ahead and still have the phone with you, then make sure the Android Device Manager is enabled. It is usually located under “Google Settings” of the Android device.

Now go to Android Device Manager web portal in your browser and sign in using your Google account. You will see the current location of your phone on a map with more details on the top left side. To track your Android phone or execute remote commands, it must have a stable internet connection. If it doesn’t have a internet connection, you will see its last recorded location and the remote commands will execute as soon as the phone connects to a network.

Find Lost Android Phone in Your Present Location

If Android Device Manager shows that your phone is still in your house or anywhere you are present right now, then simply ringing it will help you find it. Best of all, Android Device Manager is capable of ringing the phone even if it is on “Silent” mode. In the same web portal, click on the “Ring” command and confirm the prompt. This will make your phone ring at full volume for 5 minutes straight. If your phone is nearby, you should be able to find it.

What To Do If You Lost Your Android Phone Outside?

If your phone is out of your reach, then the first thing you should do is lock down your phone. This will ensure no one access your phone data if they get their hands on your phone.

Lock Phone with Android Device Manager

In the same Android Device Manager web portal, click on the “Lock” command. On the next dialog, you need to enter a password to lock down your phone remotely. Additionally, you can also provide a phone number and a recovery message (shown on the lock screen). Anyone who finds your phone can use this information to contact you. Now click on the “Lock” button to lock your phone remotely.

Once you lock the phone, use the phone location provided by Android Device Manager to track and recover the phone. If you can’t reach the location for some reason, wait for someone to contact you back using the information you provided.

If you are sure you have lost your phone and there is no hope to recover it, then you should at least wipe all the personal data to prevent someone from abusing it.

Erase Your Phone Data Using Android Device Manager

Click on the “Erase” command in Android Device Manager and confirm the prompt to erase all the data on your phone. This will remotely factory reset your Android phone and delete all the data in the process. However, this may not delete the data inside your phone’s SD card.

Did You Manage To Recover Your Phone?

Using the Android Device Manager, you should be able to find your Android phone. Only two factors can prevent you from recovering your android phone, if your Android phone doesn’t connect to a network or Android Device Manager is disabled in it. If these two factors are fulfilled, then you should be able to track your Android phone or at least protect your data inside it.

Do let us know in the comments if you manage to recover your Android phone using the Android Device Manager.

How To Download Gmail Emails and View Them Offline in Your PC

Gmail stores all your emails in Google Drive. If you don’t trust a cloud storage service to store and backup all your important emails, then you might like to download a copy of your Gmail emails. Fortunately, Google Takeout service allows you to download your data stored in most Google products; including Gmail.

Below we have given step-by-step instructions on how to download all Gmail emails using the Google Takeout service.

Download Gmail Emails Using Google Takeout

Google Takeout is a separate services, so you will have to access Google Takeout website and sign-in using your Google account. On the next page, you will see all the supported Google services with a “Green” button next to them. Assuming you are only looking to download Gmail data, click on the “Select none” button at the very top to unselect all the Google products.

Now scroll down to the “Mail” product and click on the “gray” button next to it to select it (it will turn green).

To further customize what you want to download (which you should), click on “Mail” and choose “Select labels” from the options.

By default, only the main 6 Gmail labels will be selected that contain all your emails, other Gmail data such as email in Trash or Spam, your synced Call logs or SMS and third-party managed emails will not be selected. If you want the other data as well, select it on this page and click on “Done”.

Tip: You may also like to select the “Contacts” product if you are interested in downloading all your contacts in Gmail as well.

After selecting all the mail data, click on “Next” at the bottom and select File type and Delivery method in the next step. If you don’t know which File type to choose, then .zip should work fine for you. For the delivery method, you can either send the archive file to a cloud storage service or get a download link via email to download the archive in your PC. After selecting the right options, click on “Create archive” button below to start the process.

Depending on the size of data you have in Gmail, it can take quite some time to create an archive and send it to you (even hours and days). For my 318MB archive file, it took approximately 15min to receive the download link via email.

Once you download the archive, you will have to extract the .zip file using Windows built-in extractor or a third-party archiver like 7-Zip. In the “Mail” folder of the Takeout archive you will find a MBOX file that contains all your Gmail emails.

Mbox file format is made for email clients to read, so your operating system will not be able to open it. Below we have explained what you can do with the Mbox file.

Open Mbox File and View Emails Offline

If you don’t want to import the Mbox file to another email client, then you can also view the file in your PC using a Mbox file viewer. I really liked free Windows MBox Viewer for this purpose that is free and very easy to use, but it is only for Windows. If you are on Mac, you can give MBOX Viewer a try.

Download and open Windows MBox Viewer. Click on the “File” menu and choose “Select folder” to select the “Mail” folder you got in the Takeout archive. This will add the folder in MBox Viewer and you will see all the emails in the above panel. You can click on each email to preview it in the window below and also interact with it.

download-gmail-emails-mbox-view-email

There aren’t many features or customization options, but you should be able to search, read and interact with the emails without losing any details.

Apart from viewing the emails offline, you can also import Mbox file in an email client to transfer all the emails to it. For example, you can move the downloaded Gmail emails to Thunderbird or even to another Gmail account. Here is an article on how to import MBOX file in Thunderbird or any other email service.

Conclusion

Downloading all your Gmail emails in your PC is a great way to backup Gmail emails and have a copy to access offline. If you are planning on using this method to download and backup Gmail emails in your PC, then you will have to occasionally go through the whole process to update the backup and also delete the old Mbox file. Furthermore, dealing with the Mbox file can be a little confusing, if the above instructions weren’t enough or there is something confusing you; feel free to let us know in the comments and we will be more than happy to help.

Capture and share VR photos with Cardboard Camera, now on iOS

Whether you’re hiking on the Olympic Peninsula or attending your cousin’s wedding, go beyond the flat photo or selfie. With Cardboard Camera—now available on iOS as well as Android—you can capture 3D 360-degree virtual reality photos. Just like Google Cardboard, it works with the phone you already have with you.

VR photos taken with Cardboard Camera are three-dimensional panoramas that can transport you right back to the moment. Near things look near and far things look far. You can look around to explore the image in all directions, and even hear sound recorded while you took the photo to hear the moment exactly as it happened. To capture a VR photo, hold your phone vertically, tap record, then turn around as though you’re taking a panorama.

With a VR viewer like Google Cardboard, your friends can relive those moments as if they were there.

From rock concerts to real estate to mountaintop vistas, more than 5 million moments have been captured with Cardboard Camera on Android. Share your VR photos with the #CardboardCamera hashtag—we can’t wait to see the world through your lens.

Facebook Co-Founder Donates $20 million to Clinton Campaign

Dustin Moskovitz, co-founder of social media giant, Facebook, has given a ‘number of organisations’ a $20,000,000 boost for the sole purpose of helping Hillary Clinton defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming US presidential election.

dustin_moskovitz_headshot

Announcing the multi million dollar contribution in a blog post on Medium, entitled “Compelled To Act“, Moskovitz writes that:

“This decision was not easy, particularly because we have reservations about anyone using large amounts of money to influence elections. We hope these efforts make it a little more likely that Secretary Clinton is able to pursue the agenda she’s outlined, and serve as a signal to the Republican Party that by running this kind of campaign — one built on fear and hostility — and supporting this kind of candidate, they compel people to act in response.”

Contrary to some early reports, the $20 million has not been directly given to Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, but has instead been shared by several different organisations, most notably, The League of Conservation Voters, the Hillary Victory Fund, and also the Our Future PAC.

Muskovitz commented that while he and his wife had voted primarily Democratic in previous elections, this was the first time they had publicly endorsed a candidate, and chosen to donate.

Although one of the original founders of Facebook, Muskovitz went on launch Asana with prominent libertarian and Donald Trump supporting Peter Thiel.  “If Donald Trump wins,” Muskovitz writes, “the country will fall backward, and become more isolated from the global community.” Thiel by contrast, was one of the main speakers at the Republican convention earlier in the summer, and only last week wrote a strong endorsement for Trump in the Washington Post.

Muskovitz has also previously distanced himself from Thiel’s views regarding Trump, particularly those concerning Muslims, and also the Republican candidate’s intention to build a wall on the US-Mexico border.
