Google Maps v9.61 Introduces Two Wheeler Mode, Reserve with Google

Google Maps is among one of the most popular applications created by Google. Millions of users make use of the app every day to find directions or to check out a locality, etc. The app has received several updates over the years. The latest update comes today as Google Maps v9.61 is all set to roll out.

Google has been frequent when it comes to updating their Maps app. Only a couple of days ago we talked about how the Google Maps v9.60 brought in changes such as Picture in Picture mode and Video Submissions. Less than a week after that update, Google has introduced Maps v9.61. Let us take a closer look at this new update in detail –

Reserve with Google feature goes live with the Google Maps v9.61 update.

Google Maps v9.61: What’s New

This update to the app brings out two major changes –

Two Wheeler Mode

Of late, Google has been asking a number of map users (the writer of this article included) if they frequently drive a two-wheeler. As of now we are not clear what Google plans to bring in form of actual changes, but we know they are working on a two-wheeler mode. Lines of code from the app have also indicated that and it is possible that Google Maps v9.61 would soon add a new mode for navigation fine-tuned for two-wheeler riders.

Reserve with Google

A feature which Google announced back in July, Reserve with Google allows the users to make bookings and reservations at spas, salons, gyms and other similar places directly from Google Maps. While that feature was announced a while back, it has started to roll out with the Google Maps v9.61 update. Users would be able to make bookings and reservations for services such as : Barre, Dancing, Facial and Skincare, Haircut, Massage, Pilates, Waxing & Threading, and Yoga.

Update your Google Maps app to the latest version and do try out all these new features!

Alphabet Reorganization Completed; Creates New ‘XXVI’ Holding Company

Almost two years ago, Google announced that their entire business model was going through a major change and a new parent company Alphabet was announced. The company began reorganizing then and it has taken them almost two years to complete what they had planned then.

Google had been entering a number of markets and sectors and they were looking for an organizational structure which would help it give proper focus to each of these units as a corporate. This was why Alphabet was born. The restructuring of Alphabet was completed today as XXVI Holdings Inc. – Alphabet’s latest holding company was created.

XXVI will now hold the equity of each company under the parent company, which includes Google too. This means that Google is now separated from other companies under Alphabet such as Waymo, Verily etc. Many of these companies which acted independently from Google were called ‘Other Bets’ in the past. With the company finally gaining a proper structure, all the subsidiaries will now become a part of the main organization.

Google too, is changing from a corporation to a Limited Liability Company. This change is being made to all the companies under Alphabet as the parent company perhaps wants to make sure that problems in one of subsidiaries does not spread to the others and that they can function independently.

XXVI, the newly formed Holdings company stands for 26 in Roman numerals – which is also the number of alphabets. Here’s what the official FCC filing reads:

As a result of the corporate reorganization, Alphabet and Google will be able to operate in a more efficient, economical, and transparent manner, allowing the companies to concentrate on their revenue generating activities.

The company says that this is a ‘legal formality’ and nothing will change when it comes to the internal functioning of the organizations or the way they pay taxes. Stay tuned with us for more updates on this story.

You Can Now Take a Screenshot Using Just Your Voice!

Over the past few years, all the major tech firms have been introducing smartphones capable of doing multiple tasks without even as much as touching the phone. Google too, has been introducing frequent updates to the Google Assistant. The latest such update allows the users to take a screenshot using just their voice!

Voice commands are increasingly getting common, especially with devices such as Google Home and Amazon Echo rising in popularity. Compared to it’s competitors, Google was quite late in entering this segment. Apple’s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana and Amazon’s Alexa have been around for much longer. However, with these frequent updates to the Google Assistant, Google is more than catching up for the lost time.  Let us take a closer look at how to take a screenshot using voice –

How to Take a Screenshot Using Voice?

For users who want to take a screenshot, the only way (without using any skins or additional apps) is to press the power and the volume down keys together. However that method has its own flaws as the timing needs to be right. While most users successfully manage to get it done in the first attempt, sometimes even the most prolific smartphone users would end up mistiming. This would lead to either the phone getting locked due to the power button being pressed, or the volume bar showing up on top.

The process is much simpler now. In order to take a screenshot using voice, simply say ‘OK Google, Take a Screenshot’ and the Google Assistant would do the needful for you! One of the most interesting features of screenshots which have been taken by the Google Assistant is that these screenshots do not show the bottom navigation bar. Moreover, Google would automatically open the ‘share’ panel from where you could simply tap on the platform where you want to share your screenshot.

This is indeed an interesting update from Google and one which would certainly make it easier to take a screenshot! Try out this feature on your Android phone right now!
