Google Confirms Pixel 2 Launch Date: 4th October

Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are Google’s upcoming flagship smartphones. The phones will be unveiled at Google’s hardware event in October. The event is all set to take place in San Francisco, on the 4th of October at 9am PT.

The launch date of the Google Event was speculated to be the 5th of October, but the date has now been revealed by Google and it is actually the 4th of October. Interestingly, 4th of October is the same date when Google announced the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones last year.

A Google Billboard highlighting the Google Event on 4th October

Yesterday, Google began putting up Billboards announcing the event on 4th of October and today the website for the event has gone live too! Pixel 2 is less than a month away from its release.  Google also released a video highlighting the problems their upcoming Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 smartphones would solve.

When you open the Google Event website you are greeted with a question mark which soon unscrambles into a ‘G’ Logo – with the text ‘Thinking about changing phones?’. This is a dead giveaway that Google is indeed launching their gen-next Pixel 2 Android smartphones at this event.

After Google asks you the question, you’re met with a screen that asks you to subscribe for more details. While the company has not directly stated that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will launch at this event, all these teasers are a dead giveaway that a new phone is coming.

Speculations also point out that along with the Pixel 2 smartphones, Google will also launch a new, smaller sized Google Home device, a new Chromebook Pixel laptop as well as new Google Headphones running the Google Assistant. (You can read our complete report on the leaked Google headphones images here)

You can visit the teaser website for the event here.

Chrome 64 Will Unify Your Auto-Play Preferences on Mobile and PC

Google will roll out the latest update to their Google Chrome web browser in January 2018. The company releases updates to the browser almost every six weeks. While we are still on Chrome 61 right now, Chrome 64 will be a major update.

We say this because in all effect, Chrome 64 will put an end to the annoying auto-playing videos on PC as well as phone. This is what Google is calling as a ‘Unified Experience’ across phones and desktop.

With Chrome 64, Google will take things to the next level. Websites which play auto-playing videos will only be allowed to play videos in one of these three conditions:

  • If the audio in the auto-playing has been muted by default
  • If a user expresses interest in the content
  • If the user has added the site to the home screen

When it comes to ‘expressing interest’, Google clarifies it up by stating this means if the user has clicked anywhere on the webpage.

The reason Google gives for this sudden display of aggression towards auto-playing content is that unexpected media playback can consume data, power and annoy the users with unwanted noise.

Chrome 63 Audio Muting Controls

Google has been improving the state of online advertising over the years. While some might call it muscle flexing from Google, the fact is that this is indeed good for the consumers. Last August, Google had begun ‘punishing’ webmasters with obtrusive ads on their webpages. This time around, the company is looking forward to put an end to the annoying auto-play ads.

Google started this war against Auto-Playing content with the announcement of Chrome 63 where they allowed the users to mute certain websites forever. (You can check out our complete report of this update here). Interestingly, Chrome 63 will also warn users about MitM attacks. The Chrome 64 update would begin to roll out in January 2018. Stay tuned with us for more updates.
