Indian Government Hits an All-Time High For User Data Requests From Google
Government surveillance is a harsh reality. There are many people who are paranoid over their privacy on the internet. Such themes have been explored in detail in various science fiction movies and books. While many people thought this is a problem of the ‘western society’, it is a global phenomenon now. The Indian government, as per Google, is now at an all-time high when it comes to user data requests.
This year, Google had 3483 requests from 6343 accounts from the Indian Government. This includes requests from government agencies, courts and parties in civil litigation in India. Out of these, data was provided for 54% of reports.
All user data requests by the Indian Government since 2009
These numbers were revealed as a part of Google’s bi-annual transparency report. These numbers are based on statistics observed between 1st January to 31st June. In this six month period, the number of requests have gone up by 391. In the same period last year, Google received 3,452 requests for data from 6,207 accounts.

Google has maintained their bi-annual transparency report since 2009. Since 2009, India has witnessed a dramatic change in the political system. The Indian government is now ruled by the National Democratic Alliance and since their arrival there has been a constant rise in the number of requests.
Reporting period, User data disclosure requests, Users/accounts, % of Requests accepted.
However it would be unfair to say that the rise in user data requests is due to a change in the Indian government because this is a rising trend and would perhaps have been the same even if the government hadn’t changed. “When we receive such a request, our team reviews the request to make sure it satisfies legal requirements and Google’s policies,” Google commented.
This is worth pointing out that these requests are just made to Google. There are a number of other websites such as Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter and the like which also get periodic user data requests from the Indian Government.
