Google’s Advanced Protection Program Will Help Protect High Value Gmail Accounts
Of late there’s been a lot of hullabaloo over privacy on the internet. There have been times when even the most effective of security measures have proven of no use. Google’s 2FA – 2 Factor Authentication tool is among the most popular tool to secure various accounts. However, the company is taking another step up with their advanced protection program.
Based on Bloomberg reports, users enrolled with this advanced protection program will be able to block third party apps completely from accessing their accounts. Moreover, the highlight of this program is that it introduces a Google powered USB Security Key to protect accounts.
This new Advanced Protection Program is aimed at high value Gmail accounts. The report specifically points it to be aimed at corporate executives, politicians and others with heightened security concerns. With a rise in security concerns and high profile hacks being reported with every passing day, Google is preparing their next-level security measures.
This security concern picked pace specially after Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign chairman’s account got hacked. In case of a 2 Step Verification process, you have to enter your ID and password, as well as verify another code which you get as a text message or on the Google Authenticator app. However, with this new Advanced Protection Program you can verify via the USB Key.
This USB Key also ensures that you are entering your details only in an official Google page and hence do not fall victim to a phishing attack. Moreover, G Suite admins will be able to force their users to compulsorily make use of the USB Key to log in, thereby enforcing safety.
This is all set to give security a major boost and protect unsuspecting users against phishing and hacking attacks as the accounts will be inaccessible without the key. More updates on this are expected to be announced soon.

Google Maps Had A Surprise For Users in Kolkata Last Week
The nine nights of Navratri are among the holiest, most festive nights in Hindu mythology and Indian culture. All of India is lit up and decorated to honor the mother Goddess. This festival is even more popular in Kolkata where Pandals are set up for devotees. These Pandals are basically elaborately decorated tents which are a real work of art. This year, Google Maps showed the location of some of the most popular Pandals of Kolkata in the city’s map.
This is a localized experience which has been noticed in the past when it comes to popular events across the US and other western nations but it is very rare in India. Google Maps really surprised us with these list of Pandals.
Google acknowledged the festival as one of the biggest events in Kolkata, and now helps users enjoy ‘pandal hopping’, which is basically visiting one pandal after the other on the trot. In Bengal, this is an all-night activity for nine nights. Pandals are made with elaborate decorations – resembling movie sets, resembling submarines, resembling forts and are really a work of art.

It wasn’t just Google which was offering such a customized experience. Apart from Google Maps, other major apps such as Ola, Uber, Swiggy among others too, were running customized offers and experiences during the nine nights of festivity.
It is good to see apps come out in support of tailored offering for local users. Personally, I used this feature of Google Maps to check out many pandals in Kolkata – the much hyped ‘Baahubali Pandal’ too can be seen in the screenshot – marked Suruchi Sangha. You might have seen extensive coverage about this in the media. All in all, a welcome move from Google and we expect to see more such tailored offerings for India over the years.
