The Google Pixel and Pixel XL came out as the hottest Android smartphones of 2016. The phones replaced the Nexus line of devices as the top line of Android devices. Google had high hopes from this device and while the company acts like Pixel has been successful, there’s something that’s really eating them from the inside – the fact that no one’s buying it.
Google Pixel came out into the markets at a price point which would compete with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S7, LG V30 and even the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. However, the fact was – almost all these phones sold much better than the Pixel devices. Here’s a look at a graph from Recode which gives a good idea about the sales of the Pixel phones:
It was evident that the Google Pixel wasn’t selling well. Google even made a joke at their terrible sales numbers when they were introducing the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Google said that the Pixel had ranked highest on the user satisfaction scale, however they also said that they wish the sales were a little more.
What was worth pointing out that back in June of this year, the Pixel launcher crossed a Million downloads – this gave us a loose idea that at least a Million Google Pixel smartphones were sold. However, the other smartphones did way better than Google in terms of sales.
While it would be wrong to call the Pixel an outright ‘disaster’ but it must be acknowledged that the phone did not sell well. At least not as good as some of it’s competitors did. Selling about a million units in eight months is quite slow. However considering the fact that this is the first phone in the Pixel series and that it lacks waterproofing, this can be sort of justified.
The markets were sceptical about this phone – and that reflected in the sales numbers. Google didn’t really put in efforts for offline sales too. This year however, Rick Osterloh did comment on how Google plans to drive heavy sales on the offline front too. Hopefully Google has learnt from it’s past mistakes and will bounce back harder than ever before.
