Meet Poly: Google’s Library of Free 3D Objects for AR and VR Apps

Virtual Reality has been one of the biggest highlights of Google’s efforts towards the future of technology. The company is working proactively on the development of Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence. There have been a number of developments in this such as ARCore among others. Google has now introduced a library of free 3D objects for AR and VR app developers to make use of. This library has been named ‘Poly’.

Image: Tech Crunch

The objects included in Poly, Google’s library for free 3D resources, include things as simple as a plant or a bird going all the way to more detailed, complex objects such as Wonder Woman! Poly has been built keeping in mind the needs of AR and VR developers and this will make it easy for them to find certain objects which they need not create from scratch and can build upon.

Google has been working in collaboration with a number of artists for the creation of thousands of objects which would cover a wide range of things – going all the way from a can of whipped cream to an iceberg. Everything on Poly can be used for free of cost unlike other platforms where creators can sell their objects.

What is interesting here is the design style of many elements. A majority of the 3D objects and elements on Poly come with that distinct polygon-like design style which Google is known for. These objects are created in Blocks, which is Google’s VR 3D Object Creation App. Moreover, this design style also ensures that the objects can easily be run because of the simple rendering.

The objects available in Poly are platform independent and can be used by developers in any platform, be it Google’s ARCore or Apple’s ARKit. This is a good move from Google and will help many beginners and new app developers get into the 3D and VR space. While most high end developers prefer to develop their objects and styles from scratch, so that they maintain a distinct look, Poly is indeed a good starting ground for many developers!

You Can Now Create and Share Lists on Google Maps for Web

Over the past few months, Google has been working really hard on making Google Maps more ‘social’. The company has been introducing many new features such as videos on Google Maps, Location Sharing, etc. However, there was one feature which was mobile-only – the ability to create and share lists of places. This feature has now come out for Google Maps users for the web also.

In the past these lists could only be created by Android and iOS users, while the Web users were only able to see it. However, the ability to create and share has now come to the PC users as well.

Creating and sharing the lists on desktop version of Google Maps is quite similar to how it is done on the mobile app. Here’s how:

How To Create and Share a List on Google Maps:

Let us first take a look at how to create a list and add places to it:

  • Log on to Google Maps
  • Click on any place of choice that you want to add to your list.
  • Click on the ‘save’ button on the left pane that opens
  • There, you can add the place to an existing list, or create a new list.

This is how you create a list. Let us now take a look at how to share a list:

  • Open the hamburger menu
  • Go to ‘Your Places’
  • Over here, you can find your list and get a shareable link.

Your list can be shared to your social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Moreover, you can also change some settings such as – will the list be private, public, or visible only to those who have the link. This feature of creating lists on Google Map is quite interesting.

It can be used to plan out travel, to help friends and family plan travel. It can be used to pin potential places of interest in your city, or simply pin a list of business associates and other similar work related places for easier viewing. This feature has begun to roll out today and is expected to reach all users in the next couple of weeks!
