Facebook Messenger is a great app to keep in touch with your Facebook friends, but it does come with its own flaws. It’s huge, resource hungry and asks for almost every phone permission there is available. If Facebook Messenger isn’t your cup of tea, then there are alternatives available as well. 1. Messenger Lite
Messenger Lite is an alternative Facebook Messenger app offered by Facebook as well. Unless you hate Facebook and are bound to use Messenger, then this is the best Facebook Messenger alternative you can get. It is light, doesn’t eat up phone and internet resources and asks for less phone permissions.
Of course, with less impact on the phone, it also has a rather old design with limited features. However, it packs enough punch to keep most users satisfied. You can easily chat, send photos, share data and do other basic things with your friends. You cannot use advanced features like voice or video calls, and it’s UI is really simple; which could be a thing actually.
Furthermore, the app is fast and light and will easily work on most Android phones – even the ones running Android Gingerbread. It is also optimized to use least internet resources, and can easily work on slow networks; including 2G networks.
2. Disa
Disa is actually a multi messenger app that lets you login with multiple IM services account and seamlessly chats with your friends. It also has support for Facebook, and when you will try to login it will automatically download the Facebook plugin. It will import all your conversation history and offers similar interface as Facebook Messenger; making the switch easier.
It lets you chat with Facebook friends, share photos and files and share location. You can also use emojis and stickers, and the Messenger like chat interface is a plus as well. You can also merge conversations to chat with multiple people on different IM services in a single interface.
Disa is still in beta stage, so it is missing a lot of features and support for services. Although it does a great job of replacing Facebook Messenger.
3. Lite Messenger for Facebook
Lite Messenger for Facebook tries to do the same job as Messenger Lite. It may not be as efficient as the official Messenger Lite, but it offers some advanced features that surely makes it a good pick. Apart from basic chatting and file sharing, you can do voice and videos calls, send videos and send gifts. On top of that, it also lets you browse Facebook news feed, update status, and view/answer comments.
It is also very light on system resources and doesn’t ask for too many permissions, unlike Facebook Messenger. It should work with most old Android phones, and as it is just 20MB in size after installation there should not be too much storage space problems.
As mentioned by developers, you may face a problem when you will logout from Facebook that may force you to quit the app twice before logging in. It’s a problem with Facebook SDK that the developers can’t resolve. Lite Messenger for Facebook is completely free, but it’s ad supported. If you are not comfortable with ads, then you can remove them for $0.99.
4. Messenger for Android™
Messenger for Android™ is basically a messaging app replacement for your Android phone that will replace your current SMS/MMS sending app. However, along with controlling your SMS and MMS, it also lets you attach third-party instant messaging apps account; including Facebook.
Just go to “Accounts” and login with your Facebook account to start chatting with your friends right from this app. It doesn’t offer too many features unlike others on this list, but it does let you share photos, videos, location and send audio messages. Messenger for Android™ is still new, so there aren’t too many features or extensive support for IM services. However, the developers do promise that all the updates are in progress and should hit soon.
Best of all, it is completely free to use and doesn’t come with any ads or limitations.
5. Trillian
Trillian is a chatting app itself that focuses on keeping your chats in the cloud so you will always have access to them wherever you are. However, it also has support for other popular IM services, including Facebook Messenger. When you will download the app you will have to create an account with Trillian. This account will be used to save all your data in the cloud and sync it with all your devices where you are signed in, whether on smartphone or desktop.
It also has great synergy with its desktop client. If you are logged in the desktop client, then you will not be notified on your smartphone when a new message arrives; less disturbance I’ll say. Best of all, Trillian servers use TLS to secure connections and make it impossible for third-parties to read your chats. If you are privacy conscious, then Trillan can be a good choice.
Unfortunately, Trillian only lets you chat with your friends on Facebook, advanced features aren’t available. It is also an ad supported app and some of its features are hidden behind a paywall. Although if using Facebook Messenger is your only intention, then you can use it for free (ads stay though).
Wrapping Up
Messenger Lite is definitely the best option alternative for Facebook Messenger as it is light and resource friendly. Although Lite Messenger for Facebook is also a great alternative if you want an advanced feature and can bear the ads (or don’t mind paying $0.99). Other multi messaging apps are also good, but they are practical when you want to use multiple IM service alongside Facebook Messenger.
