Yahoo is undeniably a member of the old guard of the Internet, but recent changes in the company has resulted in lots of noise both within and without. From acquiring mobile news aggregator Summly to extending its revenue per search agreement with Microsoft to acquiring Tumblr (which may or may not have a porn problem) – Yahoo and its execs have certainly been busy.

But they’re not done yet. The most recent acquisition is PlayerScale, a startup developer of infrastructure software for – guess what? – cross-platform gaming. PlayerScale has announced the acquisition itself on the homepage.

We are happy to announce the next big step toward our goal of building the best possible gaming infrastructure platform: we have been acquired by Yahoo!. And don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere. Yahoo has done the same and reassures developers that the platform won’t be killed.

But what does this mean for the average online citizen?

In order to go there, you have to understand exactly what PlayerScale has been doing. You might not have heard of it before, but PlayerScale provides tools that mobile games use. To date, it is said that there are 150 million users “dependent” on these tools that games use, both on iOS and Android.

That being said, it is rather logical to think that Yahoo is looking at making a dent in the mobile gaming scene, isn’t it? Then again, what niche is Yahoo overlooking these days? Aside from the acquisitions mentioned in the opening of this post, Yahoo has taken over Stamped, OnTheAir, Snip.it, and even to-do app Astrid!

Yahoo may not have the glory it had back in the day, but it sure is extended its tentacles yet again. And the gaming scene may not be left untouched.
