2 Ways to Open Google.com and Avoiding Country Specific Redirects

Whenever you open your browser to look for anything you need, the first letter that you type in your address bar is ‘g’. G for Google has become our default search destination. The smarter ones directly type the search query in the address bar but none the less, we get the localised search results from Google’s country specific site and not Google.com.

This happens because Google thinks local results are more relevant and useful to the end user (for example local reviews and maps). Thus, even if you type Google.com, you will be automatically redirected to Google.co.xx, where xx is your country specific ccTLD.

However sometimes, we need to use dot com version of Google for the standard search or to look something at global scale. During such times, you can use two simple methods to circumvent local results.

Temporary Use Google.com for a Single Search

Just type www.google.com/ncr and you are good to go. NCR stands for “No Country Redirect” and will always open you Google.com in English, no matter where you are.

Another way to do this is to use Google’s Language Tool. Select English and then the United States as the country with your login. Though the URL will remain for your country, the results will be more standardised. Now disable the location to completely remove local listings. But the previous method is more flexible as you may be using different devices and you might not want to log in each time on any other device.

Always Open Google.com with English Results

One quick and dirty way is to bookmark google.com/ncr, so as soon as you press g the bookmarked (dot)com domain is loaded.

A better, permanent solution is to change the default search parameters in your browser. We are listing steps for Chrome, which will be similar to other browsers:

Step 1: Open Chrome settings and click on Manage Search Engine.

Step 2: Scroll to the bottom and you will find an option to add a new search engine. Paste the following values:

Name – Google Global
Keyword – GG
Value –

Press Enter to save.

Chrome Add Search Engine
Chrome Add Search Engine

Step 3: Click on make default against the newly added search engine.

Now whenever you search from the address bar, only Google.com will open. Alternatively, you can press GG and then tab key to use the global engine if you have not made it as default.

You see the solution to force open Google.com is very simple. Happy Googling!!
