A New Zealand court has ruled that internet entrepreneur Kim “MegaUpload” Dotcom can be considered eligible for extradition to the United States to face multiple charges.
The 39-year-old German national, whose real name is Kim Schmitz, said “I’m disappointed.” to reporters outside the courtroom after the judgement.
Dotcom stands accused of racketeering, money laundering, and copyright infringement. The US Justice Department claims that Dotcom along with three other men cost film studios and record companies more than $500m. Dotcom’s arrest in 2012 was a dramatic affair when armed police raided his Auckland mansion. Dotcom has denied culpability on all the charges laid before him.
Judge Nevin Dawson told the Auckland court that the US had an “overwhelming” and “large body of evidence” that weighed heavily against the defendants. She also said that their defense against extradition had fallen “well short of undermining the case.” The conclusion to the 9 week case has ended a four year battle by all four MegaUpload founders to avoid extradition to the US.
But Dotcom who describes himself as an “internet freedom fighter” on his Twitter page, has vowed not to give up and fight on. He claims that Mega Upload was a genuine file sharing site, and that he could not police everyone who used the site, and thus not responsible for the copyright infringement.
The New Zealand Minister for Justice, Amy Adams will have the final say in whether Dotcom will be or won’t be extradited, but has said she will wait to see if the ruling is appealed, clearly cognizant of the fact Dotcom is expected to fight on.
“If it is not then I will need to consider the court’s determination and receive advice from the Ministry of Justice on the relevant issues under the Extradition Act,” she said.
Dotcom tweeted after the trial: “Thank you for your support. The fight goes on. Enjoy the holidays. I’m happy to be with my kids. There are bigger things than copyright.”
If extradited and then found guilty in the US, Dotcom could face up to 20 years in jail.
Under a government visa scheme for wealthy immigrants, Kim Dotcom has permanent residency in New Zealand, although possibly not for much longer.

Differences in legal and government systems can often lead to websites being blocked or censored for various reasons, and the cause isn’t always clear.
The World Web Foundation’s annual report claimed that censorship of online content rose by 6% in 2014 alone.
So is the website you were looking for just down, or has it been blocked?
Well, a new internet error code, going by the name and number of 451, has been created that aims to solve the mystery and lack of transparency associated with blocked and censored content.
At present, when an error 404 or 403 error appears on an internet browser, it normally means your web browser couldn’t find the page you were looking for. The new 451 error code is designed to inform users when that web content has been blocked.
Why 451?
The error 451 protocol, is actually a nod to Ray Bradbury’s classic dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451.
It is hoped that error code 451 will universally adopted by web-developers so that users will know when they can’t access websites or content because it has been blocked, either for legal reasons, or by a country’s government.
The original proposal was put forward by Tim Bray back in 2012, and error code 451 has now been approved for further examination by The Internet Engineering Steering Group, (IESG) which will allow web-developers to develop code 452 for the internet at large immediately.
While some technical ‘processes’ need to be addressed, code 451 should start popping up on screens around the world quite quickly when access to content is blocked.
The message that will accompany the 451 error code will read as follows:
This status code indicates that the server is denying access to the resource as a consequence of a legal demand.
The server in question might not be an origin server. This type of legal demand typically most directly affects the operations of ISPs and search engines.
Yay for the internet and freedom
I’m afraid not. You won’t be seeing 451 codes popping up in in countries that already censor the internet. Error code 451 is voluntary, and “those countries are not overly keen on letting their citizens know just how much information they are hiding from them.”
Still, it is another move in the right direction.

Yahoo’s security team, commonly referred to as the “Paranoids,” will provide targeted users with “specific actions” they can take to make sure that their Yahoo accounts will be safe so that they can ensure their Yahoo accounts are kept safe and restored as quickly as possible.
Yahoo’s new move is only the latest Tech Giant to offer such a service ti its users. Google took some similar action in 2012 when it implemented it sown stat hacker notification system into play, just a few short months after it pulled out of China after what was widely considered to be an attack by Chinese government sponsored hackers.
It also has echoes that reflect similar concerns from Facebook. State sponsored cyber attacks can be extremely advanced and pose a significantly higher risk than general hacking. This is why Yahoo have decided to join the rest of the gang and give users a dedicated alert so that immediate action can be taken to keep their account secure. Yahoo says it will only serve these notifications when it has “a high degree of confidence” that an attack has been orchestrated by an outside government or state.
It was only earlier this week that Twitter itself also warned a number of users that their accounts had been targeted by state-sponsored attackers.
Bob Lord said in his blog post that Yahoo would follow a similar path.
“In order to prevent the actors from learning our detection methods, we do not share any details publicly about these attacks,” said Lord. “However, rest assured we only send these notifications of suspected attacks by state-sponsored actors when we have a high degree of confidence.”
