LastPass Update Encrypts Your Online Logins

You know you’re supposed to be doing it, but it’s just such a bother, isn’t it? All that typing and the memorizing and the keeping it all straight…it’s such a hassle. Unfortunately, that’s the all-too-common sentiment behind most internet users and their reluctance to create strong, unique passwords. Heck, if “password” was good enough for the folks at Sony Pictures, it’s good enough for me, right

lastpass logo

Oh wait…they got hacked. Never mind.

In all seriousness, username and password combinations are no laughing matter. With even just your email address and password, an identity thief can ruin your life. Once he’s got that combination, it’s nothing to go to all of your online accounts (a quick search through your old emails will tell him where you bank, where you shop, and more), click “forgot my password,” and then change all of them to whatever he wants, after changing your email password and locking you out, that is.

Fortunately, LastPass makes it possible to have lengthy, multicharacter strings of passwords for every individual account you create. These virtually unbreakable passwords are auto-generated for each site, leaving your accounts protected and preventing you from having to remember any of it. By logging into LastPass with one unique, strong password, all of your accounts are secure and accessible from any computer or device. The award-winning application just launched an update this week–its second update this month–and includes some new enhancements to make your account security even stronger.

While most of them were minor improvements or fixes, users will love the two-factor authentication option (something that sites like Instagram and mobile wallets are now requiring), the ability to add and store encrypted credit card information, and the ability to have LastPass create new stronger passwords for sites you’ve used for years with a weak or copied password.

Tech World Answers Apple Call To Arms

At the time of writing, more than 25 of the world’s major media organizations, civil liberties groups, and technology companies, have opted to follow Microsoft, and throw their hat in the ring to support Apple in its increasingly entrenched and bitter dispute with the US government.

iphone

The case centers around an iPhone connected to one of the attackers in last year’s San Bernadino terror attacks. Apple is currently refusing to comply with a court order that has required the company to create the decryption tool that would make it easier for the FBI to unlock an iPhone that was used in the December massacre.

At a congressional hearing last week, Microsoft President and Chief Legal Officer Brad Smith said  that the tech giant  “wholeheartedly” supported Apple’s in its adamant refusal to aid the FBI. Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that US government demands were attempting to set a ‘troubling precedent.’

Cavalry

But now other companies including Facebook, Amazon, and Twitter have sailed in behind Apple, answering their call for support in the ongoing legal battle while also appreciating the fact that the case could have serious ramifications for their own perceived stand on privacy, trust and security for their own users.

Worth a like emoticon

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and founder of Facebook has also spoken up, declaring that he is sympathetic toward Apple, and also adding that he ‘ didn’t think requiring back doors into encryption is either going to be an effective way to increase security or is really the right thing to do.’

According to Recode.net, one anonymous source stated that:

“The industry is aligned and working on a joint submission to the court.” This could add increased pressure on the FBI and US government to rethink their course of action. Instead of being at the receiving end of many individual amicus brief, the tech world’s larger players appear to be consolidating their position to speak as one.

OtherInbox is a Standalone Store for Email Applications

Ever feel like there are just not enough Email tools for organizing your inbox? Well, if you do, let’s talk OtherInbox.

OtherInbox is an app store that solely contains email utilities and services. It sounds different at first, however, this is gold for people who want to discover new ways to play with emails.

otherInbox

OtherInbox works just like any other application store, a repository of new and intuitive email tools. These tools are available for nearly all the platforms including Windows, Mac, Android as browser add-ons or apps.

This is a very interesting concept. With the surge of messaging apps and supporting tools, there is a need for a consolidated view. This email tools store – OtherInbox, has initiated the concept even if the discovery is rudimentary. For the app store, you can either search for the app or browse with filters. Searching apps was very difficult, however the featured apps were a nice addition to someone looking for popular free tools.

OtherInbox does not itself gather this data, it asks developers to submit the app which has impact on emails along with meta data like supported browsers, platforms, price etc. Hence, the library is reliable with the accurate information, but you should not install any app without checking the company behind it.

otherInbox_android

Our Top Picks.

#. Inbox Pause: As the name implies, this neat Chrome/Firefox tool adds a simple Pause button in your Gmail account. You can control when messages appear in your inbox creating a more distraction-free environment while you work.

#. Boomerang for Android is a free mobile version of the highly popular email utility that offers features like snoozing, tracking and even scheduling emails. Boomerang makes email a lot smarter than it is and works on Exchange/Gmail accounts.

#. Mailstrom is a widely used email cleaner that uses powerful algorithms to make your inbox less messy. You can start a free trial for basically any email platform, after that, however, it’s going to cost you.

That was all there is to this unique app store, take a look for yourself and find out more.
