10 Simple Tricks To Improve Google Chrome Performance

Google Chrome is one of the most widely used web browsers in the world on both PCs and smartphones. It is packed with the latest features and supports almost all kinds of websites with ease, but the problem with Chrome is that it tends to get slow when you open a lot of tabs. Sometimes even opening 2 or more tabs may make it slow and if you are someone with an old computer with 2 or 4 GB of RAM then you might be facing this issue a lot.

So, here are some simple yet effective tricks that can improve the performance of your Google Chrome browser.

Disable advanced settings

Some of the advanced settings in Chrome are turned on by default and these may not prove useful and sometimes would reduce your browser performance by initiating background processes frequently.

Just head over to your settings and then scroll down to find the advanced settings. You can disable the following

  • Use a web service to resolve navigation errors
  • Automatically send usage statistics and crash reports to Google
  • Use a web service to resolve spelling errors

Disabling these will make your browser considerably faster as it reduces the number of background processes

Use The Great Suspender

The Great Suspender is a useful Chrome extension which when enabled will automatically suspend all the tabs you have opened except the one you are currently using after a period of time. You can set the time interval according to your needs.

This extension would be particularly useful for people who tend to keep a lot of tabs open and then get involved with a single tab and forgets the rest. By using this extension all the tabs are now suspended which means the amount of RAM these tabs were consuming is also released.

Remove memory hogging extensions

Some extensions like Adblock Plus, Hoverzoom etc even though seem useful may hog your memory a lot and slow down your browser. You can see these extensions occupying a lot of RAM using the task manager of Chrome.

You can significantly improve Chrome’s performance by replacing these extensions with lighter ones like Adgaurd or Ghostery

Occasionally clear your Cache

Clearing your cache and history occasionally may not only free up the storage space on your device, but also help you in improving your browser performance. You can instead use the simple cache mechanism for Chrome.

You can access this by copying this on your address bar and then clicking enter chrome://flags/#enable-simple-cache-backend. Now select enabled option from the menu and then relaunch your browser for it to take effect.

Be up-to-date

Make sure you are on the latest version of Chrome and frequently check for updates. As with latest updates Google may improve the browser from ground up by adding some tweaks or performance patches.

Check for malware

Sometimes even if you have a computer with a good configuration and using less number of tabs you may still find your Chrome browser is performing slow. In such cases it is better to check for the presence of any kind of malware or adware in your browser or PC.

Scan using your Antivirus software to make sure there are no spyware in your computer and diagnose it if any. You may not realise it by some website you visited may have injected it in your PC.

Use data saver

Install the data saver extension from the Google web store and enable it. Using this not only increases the loading speed of the websites you visit but also enhances the performance of your chrome browser by blocking unwanted and large sized scripts in certain browsers.

Enable smooth scrolling

Smooth scrolling could be enabled from chrome://flags/. Just type this in your Chrome browser’s address bar and then use Ctrl+F to search for smooth scrolling.

Once enabled, smooth scrolling would improve the scrolling cache of Chrome by replacing the normal scrolling with a quick and a fluid one ideal for slower computers.

Enable background apps

By enabling background apps and allowing them to run even after you close Chrome, the startup and launch time of Chrome could be drastically reduced. But if you have a lot of background apps do not enable this feature as it may affect the overall performance of your PC.

Uninstall and reinstall

Sometimes when nothing works, uninstalling and reinstalling your Chrome is a guaranteed way to increase its performance. Since all of your data and history are already saved on the cloud through your Google account you don’t have to worry about losing anything.

Make sure you also delete the files and folders of Chrome from your hard drive to set up chrome completely new as the files in these folders may reload your old settings when you reinstall chrome

Share Location Anonymously Without Signing-Up for Any Account

The problem with most location sharing apps is they require the user to sign-up for an account and it’s usually a Google account for authentication. Otherwise, it requires the sender and recipient to use the same app like WhatsApp or Messenger to receive location data. If you’re more privacy oriented, an app like Flare solves this issue by letting users share location anonymously to the recipient without them having to install an app or have a Google account.

This service could serve to be quite useful especially when dealing with anonymous transactions via an escrow service or meeting a person for the first time via an app like Couchsurfing.

Use Flare for Android to Share Location Anonymously With Anyone

The Problem With Google Maps

Google Maps is great for sharing location with family and friends because they’re already close to us and are more likely to use Maps. This is mainly because it’s included by default on most Android devices that are bought these days.

Gooogle requires Play services and Maps application

Google has made is easier to control the duration of sharing but using this feature means adding the recipient’s email addresses or saving it as a contact. Link sharing is possible with Maps it requires the recipient to also use the Maps application.

How Flare is Different

The concept behind the app is very simple. Flare requires only a single permission which is your location. Once it has that permission it creates a unique link that’s usable only for a single time and expires soon after. The link can be opened using any modern browser without the recipient having to install a new app or create an account.

Flare app user interface

Using The Flare App

Step 1: Launch the app and grant permission for accessing your location.

Grant location access

Step 2: Press the Play icon fab in the bottom right corner once you’re ready to share your location.
Step 3: The app generates a unique link which is shareable with the recipient and will continuously share the location till the Play button is active.

Step 4: Opening the link in any modern browser will show the sender’s location.
Step 5: To stop sharing the location press the Stop icon fab.

From left to right: steps two to five

A short demo:

Using the app

The app from there will track your location automatically and update frequently. There’s also a battery saver feature which increases the time between each update and the ability to customise the message. Of course, to truly stay off the grid, the best way would be the remove Google’s Play Services from the device since tracks its location constantly.
