What is the best way to design a catalog website using WordPress?

I am planning to create a detailed product site (approx 3000 products total). Will try WordPress but was wondering if I should create database in MySQL first and merge with WordPress or should I create custom posts and fields within WordPress? Which method would allow for greater flexibility and accuracy as products change and need to be updated as well as creating better user experience (i.e. search plugin)?
