Why don’t my USB 2.0 flash drives work in USB 3.0 ports?

I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite laptop. It has 4 USB 3.0 ports; I have a 2.0 USB flash drive.

I cannot insert the USB 2.0 flash drive into any of the 3.0 ports.

Is there an adapter or another solution?
