One of the creepiest feelings ever is to realize that someone standing next to you is peeking into your phone – constantly looking at what you’re doing or who you’re talking to. However, while you may be engrossed in a conversation or be busy doing things on an app, Google knows who’s looking at your screen thanks to gaze detection technology.
All of this is made possible with the help of AI and this technology is all set to debut with the Google Pixel Android smartphones soon. As of now there are only limited details and no timelines on this.
Google’s gaze detection system will be discussed in detail next week when Hee Jung Ryu and Florian Schroff will present a project they’re calling an electronic screen protector at the Neural Information Processing Systems conference in Long Beach, California.
Google will be able to attain gaze detection with the help of AI technology which helps track eyeball movement. The incredible front facing camera that the Pixel phones come with also plays a major part here, helping the AI see sharply as to where the person behind you is looking.
The video above shows in detail what announcements are in store. This video surfaced a few hours ago and was reported by Quartz. This is a public but unlisted video uploaded by Ryu himself, who is going to talk at the conference.
Most interestingly, this isn’t even the first time Google is experimenting with eyeball tracking technology. The company has shown interest in such technologies over a decade ago. A 2003 patent from Google was all about tracking the pointer of the computer based on the user’s vision. Another pay-per-gaze format of advertising was also mentioned somewhere down the road. However, gaze detection is coming in its final form – and it will be interesting to see how Google implements it.
